    Who was King John VI?

King John VI of Portugal lived during a turbulent period; his reign never saw a lasting peace. Throughout his period as regent and later king, such major powers as Spain, France and Great Britain (from 1801, the United Kingdom) continually intervened in Portuguese affairs. Forced to flee to Brazil when Napoleon's troops invaded Portugal, he found himself faced there with liberal revolts that reflected similar events in the metropolis; he was compelled to return to Europe amid new conflicts. His marriage was no less conflictual, as his wife, Carlota Joaquina of Spain, repeatedly conspired against her husband in favor of personal interests or those of her native Spain. He lost Brazil when his son Pedro declared independence, and his other son Miguel (later Miguel I of Portugal) led a rebellion that sought to depose him. According to recent research, his death may well have been caused by arsenic poisoning.
    - (excerpt from Wikipedia)

Emperor John VI became ruler of the faltering Byzantine Empire in 1347. He often invoked the aid of foreigners in his European quarrels; and as he had no money to pay them, this gave the foreigners a ready pretext for seizing Byzantine cities. In addition, the financial burdens imposed by displeased his subjects, and a strong party favored John V Palaiologos over John VI in the capital. Hence, when John V entered Constantinople at the end of 1354, he easily overthrew John VI. Thus ended the unremarkable 7 year reign of Emperor John VI.
