I think its more like number of planets, not number of AI's

Probably many, but that does not mean it can handle too many units, and even a 1v1 can contain many units...

A decent sized map, don't go crazy with like 11 planets or anuthing. It really depends on the size of the planets and how many there are. Remember though, a size 1000 is not twice as big as a size 500, it's four times as big, because of surface area.

No matter how much ram you have, PA just does not like to run without a pagefile, dont ask me why.

I do know that if you turn on your pagefile and give it a couple gigs it will run and you will stop getting errors.

don't like the notion of performance loss on hdd or wearing down my ssd. with 16gb, unless a game has leaks; it shouldnt be an issue. and if it is, thats a good indicator that i need to change some game settings.

There is some indiciation that having no/too small page file causes memory crashes.
SSX wrote about it on the steam support forum.

whose whining, it was an honest question.

edit: also, the pax2014 map with me and 5 ai's didn't give me any memory problems but time and ui did freeze eventually, before i captured that laser planet :(

as far as i can see, with such a configuration, you're more likely to first experience a sim slowdown on the server, especially since having more AIs means more units in game. And so far, I'm always experiencing sim slowdown (all related to navigation - pathing i guess - as systematically reported by the debug sim window). This especially happening when moving a few hundreds of bots alltogether. Really hope there's room for improvement, because, on the one hand we've been told many single units patrolling required a single flowfield for each unit and grouping them would improve response time, but on the other hand, when i'm moving a single bunch of units, i'm only using a single flowfield (if i got it correctly).
