Yep. A school in Quebec has placed a ban on homework. Apparently the reasoning behind this insane move is that children are spending too much time doing homework, so much that they apparently have no time to play or partake in extra curricular activities.
Now, I think it's safe to assume that we all know why that statement is bullshit because we've all been through elementary school. The only kid who has no time for play and other activities are the kids who did absolutely nothing in class.

I don't remember once being overwhelmed in elementary. Especially not in lower grades (because yes, this ban does apply for grades 1-6) so I don't know maybe ****'s changed and grade-school work is delivered in truck loads?

So yeah, overall this seems insanely stupid to me. Surely I can't be the only one.

It's going to vary between schools and I have heard of some pretty ridiculous homework assignments.

But even then, a total ban?
Wouldn't calling for teachers to reduce the amount be a better idea then just jumping to none whatsoever?

Finland(?) does it. Or something like it. But then their exams are like hours long.

Your threads never cease to amaze me.

But yeah homework in elementary school... hey that's where I began to learn how to copy homework. Or simple not do it. I am a horrible role model I think.

On the idea of weird school laws: Some schools around here currently follow some sort of weirdness where no more marks are given to scholars up to 6th grade. Dunno the law behind it, but I think the schools have to decide themselves if they want to do that or not. Basically because apparently numbers are too direct in telling them they suck and that would scare them. Can't show the harsh performance orientated world to elementary scholars anymore it seems.

I was homeschooled. Elementary school was based on responsibility - that is, my mom's rule was that we had a certain amount of assignments each day, and we could take as long as we wanted to finish them. Sometimes that meant 3-4 hours, other times we wouldn't finish till dinner because of procrastination.

I see no problem with homework - but in elementary school, who the hell has homework anyway? Lol.

I got a couple of big assignments and just "pick a book out of the tub and finish it by next week". The most I had consistently was a double-sided math sheet each week.

This is the funniest thing I heard today.
I did it like all normal people, either on 10 minute break before the subject or if I was too lazy at the moment I was asked the question by any teacher. Do 300 words essay in 10 minutes was extra challenging, but I am sorry Ms. Pelagia I was so tired over this weekend/week/month, I was very busy doing other homeworks, I also was really sick my head did hurt and stomach too, my dog ate the essay so I had to rewrite it and then someone stole it.
That one extra hour of sleep/going out/playing games/doing nothing was too precious.

One of my friends has a dog. That dog actually ate his homework.

Homework's just an easy out for teachers to assign grades in earlier years. If you can't teach someone in the classroom setting, what makes you think an at-home assignment helps learning?

Constantly practicing over the subject helps learn it. It's like in video games, the more you play the better you become. The more you do the subject the better you learn to use it.
I didn't read that anywhere just speaking from my point of view.

Then you run into the logical fallacy of assuming you understand the subject at all. You can't practice something you don't know, which wraps around to teachers not doing their jobs in the actual classroom.

Good thing schools stifle innovation with ***-backwards doctrines.

Not banned but we don't have much homework here in general.
Our exams are a joke though and the grades are way too heavily based on those.

You know, I'm not sure I EVER benefited from homework.
We had a fair bit of it, sure, but I rushed it and half arsed and barely did it half the time. Still got out of high school with good grades and got to a uni I wanted.

    Maybe I'm just fantastic.
