I read in one of the "will-this-feature-be-added" threads that saving the game for single player mode (GW) was going to be an option, but hadn't made any released code yet?

I agree that "death is final" needs to be more obvious.

That said, I also think that final deaths are critical to maintaining the replayability of GW (and any roguelike). Otherwise, you can try out any possible combination/strategy in a single playthrough, mining all the depth and entertainment out of the SP mode in a single go.

If you want, run an experiment. Play through GW a few times normally. Yes, it will be frustrating, and yes, dying sucks. But you will want to come back to the challenge, even if you do win along the way.

Now, make a copy of your galactic war save (I think this is possible, they are local, aren't they?) and use that to effectively save before each fight.

This is called save scumming, and I can guarantee it will ruin GW for you forever. It kills the challenge, the replayability, and the risk that makes GW and roguelikes so engaging in the first place.

I have to concur with the OP. A sudden death wiping out all of your progress is going to be very discouraging to new players as well as casual players. Generally, people who play roguelikes with permadeath seek them out intentionally; making permadeath mandatory in a genre not normally known for it might not be well received.

I would suggest making it an optional switch, à la "ironman mode" in XCOM.

I suggest that when the player begins galactic war, they are given the option to choose from either permadeath or losing a system upon defeat. Some people including me like roguelikes, but I can understand that this is not everyones cup of tea.

Also Just a random criticism, I don't like the static AI in galactic war, each faction should have a commander that moves around each turn taking systems or increasing the defence of one of their own systems. If the AI moves to one of your systems which does not have your commander in it, then you should take control of a sub commander which does not have access to all the tools which you main commander has gained throughout the galactic war to defend that system.
At the moment galactic war has depth comparable to that of a kiddy pool.
