If I had to make a guess, it'd be the amount of Trophy Points you have.
New Member: 0-5 points
Member: 5-25
Active Member: 25-45 points
Well-Known Member: 45-100 points
Post-Master General: Over 100 points

It also looks like Trophy Points come only at certain levels. I've only seen values of:
0, 1, 3, 6, 8, 13, 16, 18, 28, 33, 36, 38, 43, 48, 63, 83, 93, 113, 143, 163, 243, 263

Haven't seen any other values in between.

I can also just remove them, as they serve no purpose, hence they are disabled in the normal forum view

The PA people keep getting them faster because they arrived after the new forum points thing, and are VERY loud and friendly and give tons of likes.
Hence why 3/5 of the top 5 posters are only "well known", 1 is "postmaster" and poor grayfox is wrongly listed as "active"
