So many people complain that the server sim speed is bad and the server is lagging. So my question is, what is the recommended number of units that we can use in game without the sim speed going down the hole? (at this time, and using a system that is not very large)
I wish that they(the ones with the statistics) would post some recommended setups or limits to prevent server lag at this time.
It's not so much number of units but what they are doing. 1k dox sitting idle, not going to effect the server much. 1k dox on planet wide area patrol will not be pretty. There are lots of factors involved but I'd say you'd typically be able to have a few thousand game wide at a time.
Im gonna piggy back this thread to recommend that Uber creates a cap for how many land units, per player, can use the area patrol command at the same time. At least as an option.
1000 idle units for AI player is propably not very idle in reality. All of them might be pathfinding and looking for something to attack, in addition to calculating collisions with neighbour units and terrain.
And again: It's not the number of units which is causing trouble. It's certain commands and special scenarios. Having 10k air units? Not an issue at all. Having thousands of buildings? Not an issue at all. Having mere 200 fabbers stuck on a small island with assist command? Very big problem. Having same 200 units patrolling whole planet? Also very big problem. Even more so if these units have high speed, like Dox and Bomb-O-Bots, since that means that they require new movement targets every few seconds. Having 2,000 units move towards a common goal in formation? Not an issue at all, again.
