    Bugtracker link - #3815

This is a particularly irritating and noticeable bug where the player is unable to select units or issue orders, but is still able to view the game's progress and move the camera around. Esc and F5 do not respond either.

This has been plaguing tournaments and particularly higher-level players who seem to suffer from it during periods of high APM.

I spent a few hours last night trying to find a consistent repro for it without much success. I thought it might be a good idea to try and crowd-source this one a bit given how elusive it seems to be.

If you happen to be recording your game and experience the bug, please could you post a (ideally less than one minute) video in this thread showing your actions before the freeze occurring, the moment that the freeze occurs, and a bit afterwards to demonstrate that it is the same freeze.

I'd imagine DxDiag or equivalent would be helpful to accompany it.

I have had this happen once, about 2 days ago. I gave an ion cannon an order to attack a specific anchor. Selection was frozen from that time on and there was no response to keyboard (ESC, F5, whatever). Ion cannon remained selected.

This was a 10 player skirmish on 1 very small planet, moon template.

I'm not sure if it's quite the same bug, but I have had instances during the late game where I pressed the hotkeys to build a metal extractor, but then I wouldn't be able to place it down anywhere, select anything else, or deselect anything. The ESC menu, however, did open up. I couldn't pan the camera with the mouse wheel, but I could zoom in and out. I think it might have something to do with doing things too quickly (pressing hotkeys, clicking around, etc.) when there is a large amount of lag.

I can reproduce it EXTREMELY reliably, it always happens for me. However, as far as a graphical cause for it is concerned, you won't find much in that regard from my DXDIAG, as the drivers are about 2 years out of date, and there are no current drivers for it. (Believe me I tried. I hate proprietary components. Last time I be lazy and buy from HP... Or a prebuilt comp for that matter...)
Since other people seem to be suffering this problem, I'm kind of doubting thats the main reason. I suspect its something going on with Coherent UI, but lack the diagnostic tools to get much more than that. Regardless, here's my DXDIAG anyway.

I did see something in the Coherent UI log file once. It said that the GPU had reached its crash limit, and it would stop rendering functions.

Also, I was hesitant to post about this bug simply because I figured it was my out of date software. When I noticed quite a few people where having the same issue, figured I'd put it up on the tracker anyway.

I have gotten this bug problem every time the game runs for a long time. The computer players continue producing units whether needed or not, to the point where you can't even see the buildings for the mass of units that have been produced. Usually the bug occurs for me when I am either setting a new purchase in a production building or building a series of building/orbital units. Then all of a sudden you can't do anything else (production wise), I usually notice as soon as I can't "box" units anymore.

I have noticed that when the units are starting to slow down and get a little choppy that I can extend the time it happens by pausing the game and then going to system settings for a minute or two. Then it seems to reset it a bit longer. But inevitably suddenly you can only click on single units or double click to add a group, no production units will allow you to change their production and if you do select a factory (for instance) it shows the last factories' selections before the bug starts. So for instance if I had a vehicle factory checked before the bug happens, no matter what production facility I click on afterwards, it shows the choices for the vehicle factory - but even then you cannot make any of the choices (ie the menu shows on screen but you can't click on anything in the production menu) most of the time I can still select units (though not through boxing them) and order them to move or attack, but nothing else can be added to a build in any way - either production at a factory or constructing another building. Also at that point the escape key no longer works. (including the pause and settings menus). If I keep fiddling with it, shortly the overlay or HUD completely disappears and then eventually you can't move at all except to zoom in and out. Strangely units keep moving and playing, but only the computer can do anything at that point.

I thought perhaps it was my video drivers so I updated those yesterday, and it makes no difference except that I got a lot less of the slowdown "choppiness" before i get the issue. I have an AMD 8150 8 core processor, a high end AMD 7800 series video card with 2 GB of on board memory, 8 GB of RAM on 64 bit Windows 7 pro - all of which exceed the specs the game requires. I am also running DirectX 11 which does not show any problems when I start up the DXDiag.

That's a slightly different bug, I think. You're still able to open menus and select things.

Reckon you could start a new thread with all those details and with your DxDiag attached to it?

That sounds interesting. Faulty render calls caused by Coherent might actually cause such behavior.
