I've found that the new update is great. However, performance wise, strange things are happening. In general FPS seems to be lower, with my system getting 45FPS at the start of the game. However as more units are spawned the FPS seems to cope better, which is great. Is anyone else noticing this issue? My PCs fan seems to be spinning faster than it did pre patch so clearly something is going on back there. Fx 6300 GTX660 8GB RAM Also halfway through a game the game sometimes crashes and then rejoining seems not to work.
The game now shifts a lot of the work over to the CPU, and onto multiple cores. That's a good thing in 99% of the community. I had to update my video drivers, but now PA runs silky smooth and has very responsive UI. I'm very happy with this patch. My drivers were by no means old, maybe 2 months at most, but updating them made a huge difference. I'm running a GTX560.
The new update is designed to make better use of cpu cores (before it only used 1!) This is why it holds up better late game and the cpu fan is working harder... As for fps dropping, I've found it faster so 1. What graphics driver are you using? I run the latest nvidia beta drivers. 2. When uber does a major update like this it loses the settings, you may find something is now turned on that wasn't before. 3 do you have any mods installed? The ui has had a major overhaul so some mods aren't working, best to disable them.
In response to both comments, my graphics drivers are the latest stable version. I will be sure to play around with the settings and I have disabled all mods with the exception of PA Stats.
Yep, disabling the few mods I have has made no difference. Guess it's back to playing on all lowest for the time being.
I'm just testing the latest build on my rig. I have been getting very high fps (120+) on the previous build and my system isn't as powerful as yours: Phenom II X3, 4gb ram and a GTX 560. I'll let you know what I'm getting now, although I am running the latest Beta driver from Nvidia so might be worth trying that (I've not had any issues with it)...
Ok, so this is the test if you want to try it for comparison: Map: 2P Gamma System (1 small desert planet) Opponents: 1 x Absurd AI Graphics settings: High Screen Resolution: 1366 x 768 (PA runs at whatever desktop resolution is, so if you want to compare then you'll need to lower it just for the test). Playing the game frame rate is high (over 100 fps at start). Later in the game with lots of units it's still between 50 and 60 fps. Given your higher spec hardware your system should run faster than that. Note as I mentioned before I'm on Nvidia's latest Beta driver 340.43 Also I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. BTW if you *had* mods installed (which it sounds like you did) you may find you need to delete your mods folders from the local cache directory as sometimes leftovers from old mods get loaded causing all kinds of problems.
Would you mind uploading an uberprobe at the beginning of the game? Ctrl+F11 and then go to your C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Uber Entertainment\Planetary Annihilation\PerfLogs and upload the file here? I'll take a look and see what's what. I'd like to get this running fast on EVERYONE's machine. Especially yours, since you have a Pratchett quote in your sig and he's awesome.
FPS is a coin toss for me. It seems to be really good, or really bad. For example, with the tournament over the weekend, FPS was either really good, or really bad. And the biggest culpret was sim speed. We had a match take... 50 minutes in real time, but 30 something minutes in game time. :-/
So, uh, you're gonna have to give us more info than that. Varrak already posted how to send us an UberProbe. This gives us a *ton* of information as to what is affecting client side framerate. The ideal scenario would be to send us probes from a game that is "really good" and a game that is "really bad" from the same machine. That gives us a great starting point to see what's different in the bad game. To help with server side performance the best thing would be to post the replay lobby id of the games in question. If one game is slow and one game is fast then obviously something is different. We can crack open the replays and get a lot of useful information to find that difference. You can also post screenshots of the in-game stats panel which tells us exactly what area of code is slow. If you can give screenshots + lobby id of a slow game and a fast game then that would be the most bestest course of action. Metabolical made a great post on "How to report issues when the game is running slow". https://forums.uberent.com/threads/how-to-report-issues-where-the-game-is-running-slow.60973/ If you guys follow those instructions then good things will happen.
Post screengrabs of the in-game profiler, too (for each section - client, server, sim, etc). This helps us figure stuff out. Sometimes.
Alright with the settings on low / off (with medium textures) the game is definitely playable with great FPS at the start but tanks quite a bit sometimes. Here's the log and some screenshots, thanks for the help! http://imgur.com/6dKRBe9,zyyua2X,yoLBCdw,7bSoJPp#3
