I've been wondering what if we could set a nuke to detonate in high atmo, where it would essentially be a big EMP burst. Orbital and air would get taken out (air because it crashes into the ground, orbital due to being unable to keep orbit), and ground forces would be disable for a Short/moderate duration.

Obviously you could still use nukes to kill ground and air as you currently do.

I think it would be an interesting way to crack a planet, while not making nukes a one-size-fits-all affair.

Actually, normal nukes can work as EMPs. A specialized one would just be pre-programmed to detonate higher up instead of above a city or inside of one.

Nukes always detonate above targets because it makes the explosions more explosiony.

The thing is, nukes are detonated higher up to maximize casualties; however, robots are immune to radiation, providing a reason to ground a nuke.

It's not just to spread radiation.
