area commands are what make this game even possible without stupid high APM.

I tried playing starcraft a few months ago after several months of PA. didn't end well.

Yeah, I played a match of starcraft 2 a couple of months ago to see how I'd do, and I got so frustrated with the horrifically simplistic and pathetic UI that I couldn't even understand why people still play it.

The first time I used an area command I fell in love. I believe this is the shape of things to come... not just for PA.

In a few years we'll have fanboys fawning over how blizzard invented the area command for Starcraft3, like apple fans credit Jobs for inventing the tablet. It makes me sad to think that's how the larger RTS community will see things, but all of us here know Uber did it first.

Don't worry. Blizzard would never add area commands because they like micro.

Well, replace Blizzard with Uber, Starcraft3 with PA and Uber with the developers of Spring RTS and you have the true story :p

(Or maybe not...maybe someone actually did it before them :p)

Actually, in the wayback machine we can see Blizzard making huge innovations in simplifying UI and reducing micro. Warcraft 2 invented the context sensitive right click, and the area selection of units. Diablo 1 & 2 were also amazing, groundbreaking work in player friendly UI. Sadly I believe that Blizzard is dead.

Yeah, same thing happened to me the other day playing FA.

Also, how can you play SC2 and not try to scratch the skin off your face in agony?

SupCom 2 was a decent game. It wasn't a good successor to SupCom 1, but that doesn't mean that it wasn't a decent game in its own right.

I just wish they renamed it to something else. Or made it a spinoff and called it SupCom tactics or whatever.

I play it as though its a separate game with a storyline and lore very loosely connected to the other games

FA was my jam for about 5 years starting at age 8. at one point i had more mods than the heavy skyrim modders do right now. Those games would take 20-30 min to load a 4 player skirmish match with 3 AIs so i usually went to read or something while it loaded.

If FA had area commands my life would have been about 7x better.

Spring had area commands before PA even existed.

Not saying it's true. But as OP and topic suggests, would you like them in more games?

Poll: Should area command be in more games than they are, and are they the "future of games".

    Yes [] Results: 88%

    No [] Results: 3%

    Bacon? [] Results: 9%

Personally, I feel that PA has massive potential to carve it's own was into the eSports scene. I mean, we're not even at release yet and we already have well-attended tournaments pretty much every weekend. We have ongoing tournament series (KotP). This all without that much encouragement from Uber or much in-game focus on it (we have our own ladder for example).

People obviously find this side of PA fun. I'd like to think there is a gap in the market for a macro RTS in the eSports scene.

Indeed area commands are a vital workflow in PA.
