I was watching some PA games last night on twitch on my xbox one and I was thinking how awesome it would be if I could lay on the couch and play PA with the xbox one controller.

I just did a bit of googling but couldn't work out whether coherent ui supports xbox one or not?

I'm all for Console RTS games but PC to console RTS ports never really work out, the controls always feel wrong for one, the only way for there to be a console RTS honestly is if it was straight up made for a console, Halo Wars for example was probably one of the best console RTS games because it was built with console's controllers in mind... If you really want it get an HDMI cable, or better yet, the Steambox or something. :p

This won't happen for two reasons.

First off, the Xbox One doesn't have enough power to handle PA.

Second, controllers simply do not work well at all for RTS style gameplay. You can't get the precision and speed necessary to play a RTS game from a controller. You simply need a mouse for the speed and precision, and a keyboard for the keyboard shortcuts.

Halo Wars and C&C for consoles did not do well at all.

at least it's not a wii port that's being asked this time around

    GOD! that was ludicrous!

It's doesn't mater. If Uber decide to make console version of PA one day they'll need completely new renderer (There is no OpenGL support on xbone) and UI anyway. Coherent was chosen because of modability and it's doesn't mater for consoles because no mods there.

Pffft.. The Xbox One has much better specs than I, a PA port though would still be ridiculous as it'd probably not go to well, like I said earlier PC to console ports are so much worse than a game specifically designed to be played on a console, with a controller. (Like Halo Wars! :D )

Edit: Whoa wait, did you say Halo Wars didn't do well? It was the most intuitively made console RTS, designed specifically for it, and very well compared to other games attempts. If you mean in sales the only reason I'd see behind that is because I know quite a few people hated it claiming "it's not Halo" etc... Whilst the other half really loved it and had played it a lot! It was pretty simplistic, though very well made, with the knowledge that it'd be played solely on console, it was designed from the beginning to fit with a controller, and unlike PC to console RTS ports the mechanics within' were designed to fit a controller as well. The selection box you see on most RTS games for example just doesn't work for a controller, Halo Wars instead opted to make it so holding down a button would bring up a green circle, any units you highlight with this circle (that you moved around with the joystick, not expanding it unlike the dragging box) would be selected and let you do commands with. The game was just designed specifically for consoles, which is why it worked. PC to console ports just don't because not only were the controls not originally designed for a controller, the mechanics weren't either.

My laptop is less powerful than an Xbox One and PA is fine. C&C games on console also work well and have precision so a port could be possible. Obviously there wouldn't be PC-Console servers as PC players would have an advantage.

Exactly! Both Xbox One and PS4 are equivalent to a nice mid-range PC.

RTS can work on consoles, problem being is that a console would require a whole different user interface and control style. There are very few console RTS that have ever made a succesful control style for a gamepad.

    Completely agree!

It isn't always so bad, it can be well in fact, if designed entirely with the fact it's using a controller in mind!

I asked this very same question about the Wii U and from the answers I got from the devs will also be applyable to this question.

The reasons why it won't happen is the following:
    1. To small installbase, 4.5 millions ain't enough
    2. Too weak and the game needs to be rebuilt! Yep, even the Wii U version had to be rebuilt from the ground up, it will still handle the game thanks to the risc CPU, the standalone GPU and the eDRAM. Xbone on the other hand has everything unified and the GPU and cisc CPU (APU) is sharing the very same amount of RAM. And the also the eSRAM is tricky to handle according to many gamedevelopers. A cisc CPU requires much more RAM for every task than a risc CPU and therefore there might be lack of RAM (this game still requires a lot of it). Basically, Forget Uber Graphics!
    3. It is not easy to convert a point and click RTS game into a controller steering RTS game. The Kinect options could be interesting, "Show commander" and it will show your commander on the screen... It is hard to make it work with satisfaction, you are both faster and more precise with a pointing device (i.e. a mouse) than with a controller.
It isn't impossible, but still, as for the Wii U (which seemed to be more likely thanks to the Gamepad), it won't happen anytime soon or even at all.

RTS's are made for PCs. To ask them for a console is just plain nuts.

RTS's use hot keys, and make use of entire keyboards and mice. Consoles never have enough buttons to use them all so..

NO. NO CONSOLE PORTS! They would just ruin the game experience.

Except the ones designed for consoles... *cough* Halo Wars *cough* *cough*

No but seriously, for a console RTS it was very well made. Why? Because it wasn't a port, it was mad FOR the Xbox.

    No. :p

Mid-range PC at moment it's i5 CPU, 8GB RAM and GPU like AMD HD6950 / Nvidia GTX560 Ti with 2GB GDDR5. Might be low-level GPU access make integrated graphics faster (let's say 2X faster) so it's can be count as equal to those dGPUs above, but CPU performance and amount of RAM is nowhere near to such PC config.

If ya'll want the boilerplate response: we're excited about the new consoles, but right now we're focusing on the PC, Mac, and Linux versions of Planetary Annihilation.

Well there is the added bonus of a simplistic OS, which means much more of the power goes to the game. That is the reason they can afford to use such specs whilst performing in the same way as a mid range PC or above. Also, to me the specs you listed are a dream, though that's my fault. Hoping to get an extra four gigs of RAM soon! :D (I at least know they have 8 gigs of RAM, and some sort of AMD processor... Which honestly aren't the best, but meh.)

Edit: In fact, just to support what I'm saying.. Even the Xbox 360 with it's terrible specs outperforms my PC. It can play Crysis 3! :D

So you can still claim to be developing a version for the "Steam Machines" (= consoles) that can be played from the couch (using the Steam Controller) :D
