Gatecrashers ("Game Mode" idea)

    Please take chill pill before you rip me to shreds as I try to be fairly original when I actually suggest something. :)

    We all good? Cool. ^_^

    Playing PA the other week with all the flyers and tanks, bots and orbital laser cannons I was missing a good old-fashioned melee brawl. And my brain being what it is, it conceived of...

    Gatecrashers!

    In this "game mode" you have a trio of planets; two medium ones and one smaller one. Two players enter this arena with the age old objective of beating each-other to a smouldering pile of slag and silicone. One player starts on one of the medium sized planets and the second player starts on the other planet.
    Now here's a few differences. The orbital lander is unavailable for use. You can use other orbital units but not the transport pod or whatever it's supposed to be.

    "But how in tarnation do ye expect us te git to that tar otha' planet then?"

    Easy... Ish. Because each of the medium sized planets are equipped with a neutral indestructible teleporter at the south pole. These teleporters lead to the north and south pole of the smaller planet respectively and can be used by both players freely. They gates will have to be guarded from the enemy invaders. The third smaller planet will act as a type of battlefield. A wreak ridden no-man's land of burnt out husks and trash metal strewn over the scarred earth. The one who controls the gates, controls the game. Fail to defend your gate and you will have a hard fight, you may even lose.

    Technology Restrictions:
    * Teleporters are unable to be built by anyone.
    * Aircraft are unavailable because this is supposed to be a melee.

    Things to keep in mind:
    Your goal is to eliminate the commander.
    Clogging up your gate with absurd number of defences will block your units form using the teleporter as well as keeping the enemy out.
    All orbital technology units except for the orbital lander are available and free to be used.

    So build your armies of bots and tanks... Defend the gate at all costs... And crash the gate of your enemy to destroy him.

    Good idea, reminds me of one of the future updates that's supposed to happen for Planetside 2

    Thanks. :D Means a lot. Yeah, you could play teams or even scale it up a bit with more medium planets. Maybe have a little gate web of smaller planets on larger games to avoid battle field congestion.

    I guess the endgame would be Halleys on the small planet as there'll be a point where each team has a stupid amount of defenses around their portal.

    Or nuke it. Whatever's simpler. Remember to win you have to be able to get to the other commander. That means having your gate be passable.

    I had in mind having all gates be neutral as the stock behavior a while back before gates where finally added. :

    just a small side note. will orbital engineers be locked? because I don't remember ever using the Atreus over them to get to other planets.

    wait, couldn't you just spam T3 turrets around each teleporter?

    They would not. I though about it and with how quickly you can get up umbrellas, even an avenger or two, long before any OrbEngineers can come and start setting up anchors I would allow them in game. Only unavailable units would be naval, air and the orbital lifter.
    Naval for the obvious reasons. Air because they can't pass though gates and this is supposed to be a melee. :p

    You could. But you wouldn't win. Also: Nukes.

    Sounds good... I think it should be a system editor function to be able to place neutral teleporters around the place though...

    I updated the op with some things. But I was thinking about nukes and Halleys. Should those really be in this game mode? I mean it's a melee and nukes can be used to "Com Snipe".

    I feel obligated to point out:
    A. The 'exit' ramp of the teleporter is opposite of the 'entry' ramp.
    B. Only so many units can go through a teleporter at once.
    C. Artillery.

    The idea is used on the original Planetside.
    Each side has a Sanctuary that can't be invaded, but can be pushed back to.

    Sadly Planetside 2 ruined that part of the fun. But it would be great to have a series of planets and "stargate" between them to the enemy home

    Never played any of them so I wouldn't know. And I bet my idea is a lot older than that. :p
