can we please do something about anything surrounding icons being touched breaking the game?

Not even shadowing files but even replacing a simple PNG will cause PA to lag and crash when multitudes of units are on screen where if you remove the PNGs (or shader or unit list) PA lets you rejoin the same match without crashing.

yeah they work .. but are you happy with how they look now ?

I´m about to redo all of the icons .. the goal:

    - lookin good with the new black shader

    - lookin good with the old "white" shader (which will most surely be a separate mod)

.. will be lots of work and coffee ;-)

    thx for feedback guys

    Edit:
did not happen to me with my last test - will try this again

thank you for not abandoning this mod in times of harsh changes and increasing coffee prices.
in vanilla you still can't discern your fabbers from other units easily, so i'd like to keep using it.

Are you talking about it crashing when modifying the PNGs while it's running? Even updating shaders can cause the game to crash, but it'll be low priority to fix as it's only a problem for modders (and me).

The blue channel of the icons are not used currently. The red channel is a grayscale representation of the icon and the green channel is the mask. You could use the blue channel to be a grayscale representation of the icon in the selected state.

I had hoped to get a more flexible system in for doing unit icons, but I don't know when (if ever) it'll get added.

What would the system have added? More functionality for the shader? As far as I'm concerned, all the functionality I'd like is present, except for the very minor caveat of the behaviour of icons when they are hovered over; instead of the icon being enlarged it should pass a variable to the shader file (for instance v_SelectedState is 1 if icon is selected, 0.5 if hovered over, 0 otherwise), and not increase the size of the icon!

Thanks for fixing it all though, I think it all works much better now.

@tatsujb - Can you post a .png file that crashes for you?

@xedi - I had that in at one point, both the hover state passed to the shader, and the hover state not being a size increase, and is part of what I want to add back in as optional functionality. The icon behavior (like scaling on hover) is all hard coded in the game client, and I would much rather have this defined someplace that's moddable. We eventually need to add a icon priority system which would need to be defined in each unit's json, so I may do some more work on it then.

I can ask about that. I've only ever tested the live reloading on PC as that's where I do development work. It's possible it's never worked on Mac or Linux since none of the people who use those platforms for dev ever need to do it.

Thanks. First time I've tried shaders, and I'm not currently planning any major development; no hurry.

    Hi there,

it´s been a while but Version 4.0 is nearly ready - I´m still hesitating cause it looks like UBER will redo all the icons again ...

just a quick look now: version 4.png

    Cheers,

    Moldez

    Hey folks,

even if a big UBER change in icons is comming soon, I will put up version 4 as a test version:

    Changes in short:

    - new icon shader for different colors - big thx @xedi for this and his patience telling me what I´m doing there :D

    - the new colorcode is yellow/green = fabrication, white = intel and orbital, black = all surface units

    - new uniticons (all are redone and some new)

    - few changes to scaling

.. hope someone likes to try before the new UBER icons come to the stable build

have fun and feedback is always welcome

    Moldez
