This past Tuesday, I parted myself from my ever so precious Tf2(as many of us did) and picked up Monday Night Combat. At first I had trouble establishing controls, but after figuring that out had to figure out how to play. I looked up multiple guides on how to play the assassin (figured it the closest to an equivalent, I had 500 hours as spy in tf2) and was on my way. Enjoying life, taking out bots, turrets, and a fairly good amount of players. I thought I had finally figured out the game and had come to a average players position. This was until I came across a rather swell group of members of the 'Doorman is God' group who had taken the pleasure to point out otherwise, in not so kind words (except one of them realized I was new and tried to point out things I was doing wrong, which so proved to me that I WAS in the wrong.)

Despite all of these things, I am not put down but a little, and wish that someone may assist me in pointing out what is wrong. You can play with me or talk with me or have me upload a video or something, but honestly I can't explain my mistakes when I am oblivious of them. I usually catch on quickly when explained something.

There is a strategy guide for you I believe. Reading it might prove useful. Also, I'm not sure what there is to point out because you aren't telling us what your mistakes might be. ;)

I've read through 3-4 strategy guides, watched tutorial videos. Sorry if this post looks a bit pointless, was hoping that conversation would lead to a point in the right direction. Could be wrong, but what's the hurt in trying?

People have been playing this game for a couple months now; longer if they got it on XBLA. I think if only one group of people is giving you grief and you've only been playing since Tuedsay you're doing just fine.

Otherwise, I find it problematic how you're comparing MNC to TF2 and the assassin to the spy; 500 hours of spy playtime doesn't really translate to anything in MNC, especially the assassin. The exception may be that you're good at watching and waiting for opportunities to present themselves, but the two classes really aren't anything alike. The sooner you start thinking outside of the TF2 box the quicker you can really start playing MNC :)

Ah, but I have realized that his game is much different, and that the gameplay is different. That's why I like it, because it's NOT a port but it's still got the new fun cartoony feel. The only thing that translated for me was knowing how to hide and navigate stealthily. I've realized my job is much different, and I have been immediately taking down turrets (and bots on the way to the turrets) and then hassling players and bots till I get juice and then taking out more turrets, rince, repeat.

Other than this, thanks for the optimism and encouragement. I may have posted this too quickly. I think I may have been used to being 'the amazing spy' and never really getting griefed... Other than mmos this is the first time I've bought another class based competitive shooter in a long time.

I can't give you pointer on how to play Assassin efficiently, but maybe I can give you some general advice. I found it very useful to play the classes I had most trouble with at the beginning.

On the bright side: If you have learned to prioritize taking out bots and turrets you are already ahead of the curve... :D

Sounds like you've got the right idea

I like to try to make the enemy think there are 3 of me terrorizing them from all angles. Stay mobile, lots of hit-and-run.

Don't underestimate the shurikens, especially when juiced. I actually have more shuriken kills than grapple kills

Ok, so you've read Rev's and Bolt's guide, long held to be some of the best assassins in the game who've given us a couple of guides. Even Jackal has a nice guide from the PC perspective. I play assassin as well and most of the videos on my YouTube channel are assassin gameplays (I'm a console player though). So let's ask questions and dissect what you think is the problem.

    - First, what's your main assassin build?

    - You already know your job. You're hitting bots, pushing lanes, and weakening base defenses. I'm not sure where to start if you already know this point.

    - To you fight or flee when faced with an opponent who knows of your presence. Even though the assassin builds juice quickly, it still takes work to get that juice and running away to preserve that stuff is important.

    - Are you cautious of how you use cloak? Everyone knows they make an obvious noise that gives away your presence.

    - Do you stay mobile and unpredictable? If you lunge the bots, you wreck them quickly. If you sword them, you earn more juice but expose yourself more. I typically jump around and over the bots in order to confuse enemy aim and avoid nosy assassins.

    - As a personal note, your shurikens are great against firebases. In pubs, you may find yourself with team mates who do nothing to answer the problem of enemy firebases but luckily assassins usually have the luxury to take care of them with their shurikens.

After that, it's more about either voicing your opinion on how you play or shrugging off what those players said as being an isolated incident.

Yes, definitely use those shurikens on firebases. If you see a firebase out, it should probably become your #1 priority since assassin is the best at dealing with them

Correction: only face stab people when you know they'll die from it (ala. those who are really hurt).

    Kill bots.

    Kill many, many bots.

You'll be much more useful to your team if you're dying a whole bunch while keeping bot lanes clear than you would be if you were dying a whole bunch from jumping pros and getting mongled.

Kill people who are weakened/distracted whenever the opportunity presents itself.

You'll start to pick it up pretty quickly.

Though to be clear, try to stay alive to preserve that juice you're earning.

I think I played against you once. Your not terrible, your just misguided.

You only seem to go for enemy pros. Take that as your second priority.
While you are excellent at taking pros out. (Trust me, you killed me non-stop.)
You can do far more by taking out bots.

Are you spamming lunge? Spam it more. Lunge is to Assassin like pressing any random button is to Tank.

Also, try lunging. You can turn during it, by the way.

Assassin build: Armor, RoF, Skill Recovery

I've been uncloaking before approach, or what I think is out of range of the sound

I usually shuriken bots if I see someone is in range to see me but might not notice, and lunge them otherwise. If they catch me using shuriken, I cloak off or kill them depending on how they approach me and what class they are. I think my mobility and movement was carried over from tf2, as I said. I seem to be good at avoiding enemies.

The problem I still have with firebases is I feel i need to kill the Support first, and some of them outplay me quite a bit.
I think I've picked up on the game more since then ^_^.

Lunge = best friend. I use it for travel, avoidance, and best of all murder.

I actually just posted a guide I've been working on for like, a day and a half. Click my signature picture to go to it if you'd like to check it out.

It was written for XBox 360 players, but I don't mention any control schemes or specific button layouts, so it should translate well to PC players as well.

Be warned, it's lengthy. But it's also detailed, so it should answer any questions that you may have. And if you STILL have a question, well, feel free to raise it!

As everyone has been writing, as an Assassin you main objective should be to secure and protect bot lanes

Also as an Assassin you have to also keep in mind that you will have a huge "X" on your head, meaning, everyone will want to kill you as soon as they spot you, So always remember that you have to watch your back as much as everyone else has to watch theirs from you. Always assume that someone knows you position.

Some people might even disengage in whatever they are doing because they want to be the guy who kills the Assassin, specially new players. Use that to your advantage and make people chase you down and then blast them with the ejectors.

Don't be afraid to smoke jump at the slightest sign of danger. When surrounded by enemy bots use the smoke/smoke jump to disable them and escape. Never wait until the last second to jump out from danger.

Smoke can also can be used to disable Enemy bots, Turrets and Firebases for a short time, keep that in mind your see your teammates under fire from any of those.

Always keep an eyes on you pockets too. Upgrade your skills, help to upgrade base defenses, send Gremlins, use Hazards, do a bit of everything. Money not spent is money wasted.

When the enemy ball is down is your job to keep it down. If the enemy is able to defend the push, try to sneak in the base and shoot a couple of Shurikens to keep the ball down. That will give your team a break to continue the assault.

Remember that you don't have to fight everyone you see, even if they are low on health.

Oh and ShaveIce: Stay away from it.
