    Part 1: The Second Chance

Osiris stood on the hill over looking his sprawling base. The main complex stretched for miles in every direction. What were once lush forests were now polluted wastelands. Wreckage from past battles littered the landscape as far as you could see. Fabrication bots were hard at work finishing their last few projects before making the long march to join Osiris. He knew it was time to go, but he wanted to see the fruits of his labors for one last time.

For months, Osiris and his machines had been alone on the planet, but one week ago the outer edges of his territory were attacked. Hundreds of tanks made short work of his meager defenses and enemy bombers attacked his production facilities. He was forced to retreat to the base he was in now and he held just a small fraction of the territory that he had a few days ago. The few factories he had left were pumping out sniper bots and fighters. Engineers were quickly putting up laser defense turrets and repairing walls to keep the enemy at bay for as long as possible. Just 6 hours ago, radar had detected a large force of enemy units moving in towards his base, a final offensive to eliminate Osiris.

Osiris knew the situation was dire and the base would not hold against an attack of this magnitude. Fortunately, before the first contact he had sent out orbital fabrication bots to explore the other planets in the system. He lost contact with all of them but one, which was now in orbit around a small moon. This final fabricator was now Osiris' only hope of escaping, as it had just finished building a teleporter on the moon. The teleporter in his base was complete and he was preparing to take as many units as he could with him to establish a new base.

The enemy force was now approaching the maximum range of Osiris' artillery and the shells were now on their way. The front ranks were completely annihilated but for every destroyed tank, ten more came into radar range. The laser defense started firing as the tanks got into range, but the mobile artillery ripped the defenses to shreds. Osiris' defenses were failing and he knew it. He ordered every engineer to abandon their work and enter the teleporter. As Osiris and his engineers approached the teleporter, gunships roared overhead. The portal closed and his factories fell silent.

The gunships had gone through a weak point in his defenses and were destroying his power generators. His fighters deviated from their patrol path to respond, but it was too late. The power field was demolished and his power was deeply in the red. Osiris quickly ordered his remaining engineers to rebuild; without power there was no escape. The enemy mobile artillery had finished off the last of the base defenses and tank were now flooding through the breaches in the wall. Osiris gathered his last few sniper bots to hold the line and buy the engineers some time.

Osiris had a critical advantage in that the enemy did not have radar coverage over his base. His bots had the range advantage over the the enemies' mobile artillery and he took full advantage of it. The sniper bots weaved through the destroyed base and used the wreckage as cover from artillery fire. The high caliber rounds from the sniper bots tore through the enemy ranks and within minutes the mobile artillery was a pile of steaming scrap. However, casualties were high and Osiris only had 30 functioning bots left.

Just then a fleet of transports were detected by scouts. Osiris sent out what few fighters he had left to intercept them and both sides became engaged in an intense dogfight. Missiles soared through the air and found their targets. What were just seconds ago the pinnacle of aviation were now burning wrecks that spiraled into the ground. Osiris' flak cannons tore through the enemy jets but gunships flew in and destroyed them in seconds. The escorting enemy fighters won the engagement and there were still a few transports left. They dropped off their payload in the middle of Osiris' base. Vanguards.

The heavily armored tanks melted every target in range in just seconds. Osiris ordered his sniper bots to fire on them but even their rounds did pitiful damage to their armor. The Vanguards were slowly but surely approaching Osiris' engineers. Osiris had no choice but to use himself as bait, he got into range and opened fire. At first the Vanguards did not react, but then they changed their target and advanced towards Osiris. He knew that the enemy commander could not resist killing him.

The new power generators were nearly complete and the teleporter began to spin up again. Osiris was moving to the teleporter but the Vanguards were closing the gap between them. The enemy commander must have seen this as three nuclear missiles were launched at Osiris' base. His anti-nuclear launcher had only 2 missiles loaded. The generators were now complete and the portal opened up. The first missile was intercepted, then the second; the third was about to hit in ten seconds. Osiris was nearly within range of the Vanguards, but he could not afford to fire his Uber Cannon or his power would fail again. Osiris ordered his sniper bots to block the Vanguards' path. They loyally completed their suicide mission and their wrecks blocked the Vanguards, giving Osiris just enough time to reach the portal.

Osiris watched as the missile hit his base, destroying everything he had created in the past months. The enemy now had full control of his planet while he was forced onto an uncharted moon. He knew what his next course of action was.

Find the enemy commander and annihilate him.

This is my first story, so don't be too mean. If people enjoy this enough I might continue it.

So, which is he? A Roomba descendant or a very complicated toaster over? :p

Nice story though, a few errors, but not enough to ruin anything! Keep up the nice work!

    Not bad, I like it.

Although if I had to nitpick, I would've said "find the enemy commander and annihilate him" instead of "find out who" as who the enemy is wouldn't really matter to Osiris, being the only commander searching for the progenitors, but again that's just a nerdy nitpick.

Overall I'm interested to see where this could go.

I've actually been thinking of doing this too, a sort of fanmade lore story, not sure when I'll finally end up doing it, though

    Part 2: Metal Famine

The orbital radar burst into flames and crashed into the crater with a large explosion, but it did not stay there for long. Engineers swarmed the radar, reclaiming the entire wreck in seconds. It was the third radar Osiris' orbital fighters had shot down today. He knew that this was an obvious sign that the enemy commander was up to something, but he was planning he did not know.

Osiris had been exiled to the moon for two weeks now, and he hated every second of it. Progress in creating a new base was slow; the moon lacked the amount of resources available of the terran planet he once called home. Every metal extractor was running at full speed, but without more resources, Osiris had no chance of assembling an invasion force before the enemy figured out a way to invade the moon and destroying him. His efforts to expand to other planets had discovered that the enemy had at least some presence on all of them but one. A desert planet with no indication of any activity, neither biological nor machine.

Osiris found it odd that the enemy had expanded everywhere but that planet. He suspected that it might be a trap to lure him in as initial scans indicated that the planet had numerous rich veins of metal. But the temptation was too good to pass up and Osiris put all production efforts towards creating an expeditionary force to claim the planet. Engineers stopped their work and starting to create the huge transport vessels that would carry Osiris' expedition. Due to metal shortages, what normally would have taken hours took days.

Everything hinged on this operation. By investing everything into the expedition, he could not afford the defenses to protect the moon from invasion. But without the proper resources, Osiris would eventually fall to the enemy and would have nowhere left to run. Osiris was looking at the information his orbital radar was giving him. The planet was devoid of any kind of moisture, but long winding canyons indicated that it had water at some point in its life. The landing zone was to be in the middle of a plateau that was perfect for defense. One of the engineers checked in with Osiris to notify him that the expedition would not be ready for another 6 hours. He acknowledged the update and returned to studying the geography of the desert planet.

    ~

The star was rising over the horizon as the expedition was boarding the massive transports that were to carry them to the desert planet. The base was buzzing with activity in preparation for the launch. Engineers, air transports, tanks, bots; everything needed to conquer a planet was being loaded in. Finally everything was packed up and ready to go and Osiris gave the order to launch. Massive flames erupted from the engines and the transports started to lift up off the ground. At first they were unsteady and Osiris was worried they would crash straight into the ground, but they soon stabilized and started a full burn to escape the gravity well. Osiris watched as the brights stars of the engines slowly disappeared into the infinite black of space. The journey would take three days.

The base seemed eerily silent now that the transports had left, but the silence only lasted for a few seconds before the engineers went back to work. The factories went back to producing sniper bots and mobile artillery while engineers in orbit were slowly working on an orbital laser platform. They would be sent over as soon as the expedition force could get a foothold on the desert planet.

    ~

Osiris was working on an Ion Defense Platform when he was notified the expeditionary force had arrived. His orbital radar over the planet happened to be orbiting over the landing zone and he switched to it's feed.

The massive transports had just entered the atmosphere of the planet and were starting re-entry. Fire engulfed the exteriors of the transports and the engines were at full burn to slow the ships. From the corner of the feed there was a bright flash and one of the engines on a transport exploded. The damaged ship started to spiral out of control and hit another transport, inflicting heavy damage and causing both to slam into the landing zone. The other transports completed the re-entry and were able to land unscathed. Osiris demanded a status report and one the surviving ships reported that the crashed transports were carrying the bulk of the engineers and air support.

The surviving transports opened their massive cargo bay doors and Osiris' forces flooded out. The engineers immediately started work on a basic outpost and the defense forces scanned the immediate area for any threats. Osiris was not so sure that the planet was uninhabited and didn't want a sneak attack to destroy his forces at this critical stage. Osiris was notified that the base would not be completed for another week due to the loss of nearly all his work force. They were however able to get the teleporter up and the link between the desert planet and moon was established. Osiris could not spare to produce any more engineers as his resources were nearly depleted as it was. With no other choice, he walked through the portal.

Since at least three people liked my first part, I thought I would continue on. I'm not sure how long I am going to make this, we will see how it goes.

(P.S. sorry this doesn't have a lot of action, I thought it would be weird to have a big battle after Osiris lost his entire base.)

    Part 3: Mirage

The sniper bot GH-43 was patiently hiding in the wreckage of a transport, waiting for a target. Its sensors were constantly scanning the surrounding area but found nothing. The sniper wanted to move forward to find a target, but it was under strict orders by the Almighty Commander Osiris to hold this position. It had been holding its position since the landing two days ago and not a single target had presented itself.

Suddenly, GH-43's internal scanners detected movement. Its cameras trained to the location of the movement, but saw nothing. GH-43 thought that the desert heat was making the sensors malfunction as the base radar had not detected anything. He contacted the other sniper bots in the area to see if they had seen anything. Before they could reply, his sensors went off again. Another ping.

This time, the cameras had caught something. A small metallic grey blur moving in the sand about 10 kilometers out. None of Commander Osiris' unit were supposed to be out that far so GH-43 notified Commander Osiris and the other snipers. Commander Osiris acknowledged the notification and sent out a scout plane to investigate. Before the plane could reach the target area, a missile launched out of the sand and hit the plane.

Commander Osiris immediately put the entire base on full alert. The whatever launched the missile should have been within radar range, but nothing was showing up. GH-43 and the other sniper bots were the first lines of defense in case of an attack, but they were all fresh from the factory. None of them had ever fired their main weapon before except in the combat simulations they ran when they were in transit. GH-43 didn't even know if his weapon could fire, sand might have gotten in and jammed the barrel.

Before GH-43 could check the barrel, the other sniper bots reported multiple contacts moving towards the base. Radar was still not detecting the contacts but there was definitely something out there. The other defensive units were moving up to the perimeter wall and the bots were climbing into both of the transport wrecks. Engineers stopped their previous projects to build more defensive turrets and Commander Osiris himself stood with his units to ward off the potential invaders.

The contacts must have scouted the base before as they stopped just out of artillery range. They were close enough though that GH-43 could finally get a good image of them. The contacts were in fact primitive looking tanks that were a dull grey. The contacts had a strange insignia on the side that was a a circle with a star inside and their armor looked worn and beaten by sand. GH-43 sent the image to Commander Osiris for him to analyse it. Before Commander Osiris could acknowledge, the contacts started to move again, this time into artillery range. The cannons had zeroed in and started firing. A few seconds later the shells started to impact in the middle of the enemy formation and GH-43 watched as the shells had little effect on the enemy. Although primitive looking, the enemy had extremely strong armor. Soon they started to get in range of the sniper bots. GH-43 and the other bots prepared to open fire and GH-43 made sure to load armor piercing rounds. Then GH-43 selected a target and waited.

    5...

    4...

    3...

    2...

    1...

GH-43 and the other sniper bots opened fire all at once as the enemy got into maximum range. The initial shock to its sensors cleared and it saw the aftermath of the volley. Fifty sniper bots, firing in unison destroyed the entire front line of tanks. GH-43 did not have time to enjoy its first kill though as the next line of tanks was quickly approaching in even bigger numbers. Fortunately, the enemy had to funnel through the steep incline to reach the base on the plateau. GH-43 reloaded as fast as its servos could move and he was ready to fire again in just a few seconds. It double checked that AP rounds were loaded then fired off another volley with the other bots.

Commander Osiris noted that the enemy must have very low ranged weapons as they had not opened fire themselves. As the enemy was getting near to the first line of defenses, he ordered a full retreat to behind the laser defense towers. GH-43 got up from sniping position and hopped out of a puncture in the wreck's armor. GH-43 and the rest of the bots got into their new positions behind the laser defense towers. The enemy advance seemingly stretched on forever, and for all GH-43 knew, it could have as radar could not see them.

The laser defense was starting to warm up their barrels and choosing targets. Flashes of light erupted from the towers and the first tanks melted under the withering fire. Commander Osiris himself opened fire as well and his Uber Cannon was exceedingly effective against the enemy ranks. The combined fire from Commander Osiris, the laser defense and the sniper bots shredded the tanks and soon the battle was over.

Commander Osiris sent his engineers to reclaim the huge amount of metal now sitting right in his base. GH-43 scanned the area to make sure that there were no more targets to be found. Once it was sure that the base was clear, GH-43 went into its memory banks to review the battle. GH-43 had gotten 3 kills and the enemy had lost approximately 300 units with no losses on Commander Osiris' side. After reviewing the battle in its entirety, GH-43 went back to its post to look for more targets.

    ~
Osiris had solved the metal problem for now, but the wreckage field would only support his bases' income needs for a few hours. He now had bigger problems to tend to. The radar had not been able to detect the incoming enemy units and the orbital radar had mapped the entire planet without finding a single base. He had his engineers check the radar three times to make sure it was in working order, and each time they confirmed that it was in fact operational.

Osiris had also never seen the tanks the enemy was using before nor the insignia.

Osiris had now made two enemies without even knowing who they are.

Since part 2 did not have any real action sequences (and the fact I was bored and had nothing to do) I wrote part 3 for you guys to enjoy. Note: the entire first part is from the point of view of GH-43. This is why Osiris is referred to as "Almighty Commander Osiris".

I like the swap to the sniper bot. I usually think of the bots as mindless minions, but this adds character to them, I like it!

You should get an artist from the fan and community art thread to do pictures for you. Heh, maybe you could make a graphic novel! :p

    Part 4: The Remnants

General Mason was observing the invader's base from the feed of a scout that was nearby. The orbital defense platforms had shot down two of the transports, the wrecks of which were being used as defense. Mason thought that it would have been easy enough to mop up the survivors, until the invaders had gotten the some kind of portal operational and a Commander stepped through. Mason had sent a small force of unarmed tanks to test the enemy defenses. The base seemed weak at first until the strange looking towers released the bolts of light and reduced the entire force to slag.

Mason had never seen technology like the towers or portals before. Even his orbital defense lasers , the pinnacle of weapons technology to him, could not compare. He was facing an enemy who was far more advanced than him. His only hope of victory was destroying the portal and overwhelming the enemy forces with sheer numbers. He was planning a sneak attack when he was notified that the invaders were moving out in the direction of an orbital defense laser. Mason gathered up a force to defend the defense laser while sending out another to the invader base. Mason had repelled invaders before, and he would do it again.

    ~
At the front of the convoy another bot's cooling systems failed and the reactor overheated. The resulting explosion was barely visible in the fierce sandstorm. Osiris decided to halt the convoy to prevent more unnecessary losses. The sandstorm had reduced visibility to zero and he was vulnerable to attack from the unknown force. He had left the outpost just a few hours ago after his orbital radar had found an area with extremely high energy readings. The location matched the area that the flash of light came from when his transports were shot down. Osiris knew that the laser had to be guarding something, and he suspected it to be the enemy base of operations on the planet.

The convoy stopped near a large outcropping of rock jutting out from the sand. Osiris had concluded that something in the sand was interfering with communications and radar as he could not contact the outpost. He would have to remember to have his engineers run analysis of the soil when the storm lifted. Osiris checked the map he had received from his Orbital Radar and estimated that they were approximately one hour away from the target area.

Minutes became hours and the storm had no indication of lifting anytime soon. Osiris was about to give the order to continue on when dozens of bots burst out of the sand around them and opened fire. Osiris' forces were caught off guard and suffered heavy casualties before they could react. Osiris ordered all his units to regroup next to him while more of the dull grey bots were rising from the sand every second. His unit's weapons were ineffective against the enemy bots, but Osiris' energy cannon melted through their armor with little effort.

The enemy, while rather weak individually, greatly out numbered Osiris' forces and he retreated back to the outcropping. His long range sniper bots were useless in close quarters and his tanks were becoming bogged down in the sand. He had already lost nearly half of the convoy and rest would have the same fate if something was not done fast. Osiris overcharged his Uber Cannon to 200% power and fired. Blinding white light filled the entire area and the bolt streaked through the air into the middle of the grey bots. The bots were reduced to their component atoms and the sand underneath was turned to glass.

Osiris' reactor was not supposed to be able to handle that big of a spike in power and it nearly breached containment without the immediate assistance of his engineers. He fell to the sand while his system rebooted.

    ~
The sandstorm ended two hours later as the convoy reached the orbital defense laser. Contact with the outpost was reestablished and Osiris ordered his satellites over the area.

The defense laser was massive, covering an area the size of Osiris' outpost. He ran some quick calculations and determined its power was roughly equal to three of his normal orbital defense lasers while consuming 100 times as much power. The range was also very limited, it could only shoot at targets entering the atmosphere before the energy bolt dissipated. Rudimentary technology by Osiris' standards.

Osiris' orbital laser platform was about 5 minutes away and his units were patrolling the area. Osiris had another Uber Cannon charge ready to fire in case of an attack. The laser satellite was now over the target and Osiris gave the order to fire. There was a small explosion inside of the platform and larger secondary explosion deep underground that caused the ground to shake violently. Debris was launched into the sky as the secondary explosion reached the surface and evaporated what was left of the platform.

Osiris then received a transmission from an unknown source. He accepted and saw a commander standing in the dark. The commander said "Commander Osiris, this is General Mason. We have been watching you ever since your putrid forces landed on our planet. I just received word that you have destroyed one of my orbital defense platforms. Do you think this fazes me? My armies will crush you like the vermin you are. We are the Remnants, Commander, and you are unwelcome here."

Before Osiris could respond, the transmission was cut and more dull grey bots bots leaped out of the sand around him.

Alright, here's part 4, hope you guys enjoyed it! How do you guys like the new character, General Mason?

Part 5: Not One Step Back

Another radar satellite caught fire and slammed into one of the many of the moon's craters. This time however, orbital fighters were accompanying it and they put up a good fight. Osiris' forces had the upper hand in numbers and support from the orbital defense lasers below, but sustained heavy losses. The fighters were now returning back to patrol path when new signatures were detected on the deepspace radar. Hundreds of fighters and orbital frigates and a dozen transports were on their way to the moon.

The base was not able to contact Commander Osiris due to the sandstorms engulfing the desert planet. The engineers had to make their own decisions to survive the assault. All unnecessary production was stopped and resources were prioritized towards building more defense lasers and orbital frigates. A nuclear launcher was started as a last resort. If the moon base was lost, Commander Osiris would have no way of recovering and no chance of victory.

Defenses were concentrated around the teleporter. Even if the rest of the base was lost, the teleporter would allow Commander Osiris to return and begin a new base again. The sandstorm seemed to be also affecting the teleporter on the other side as the two were no longer linked. By the time the massive attack fleet had arrived, Commander Osiris' forces were dug in and ready to fight to the last man. With the teleporter disabled, there would be no retreat.

The fighters and frigates arrived into orbit first. Osiris' own forces were already waiting and opened fire. The main cannons and lasers tore through armor and missiles weaved through the crossfire to find their targets. Osiris' defense lasers on the surface gave him the advantage at first, but as more and more of the fleet arrived, his forces were overwhelmed. The wreckage of once mighty warships slammed into the moon's surface as both Osiris' and the enemy's forces were shred apart.

Osiris' forces had taken heavy losses and were forced to retreat back to the teleporter under the covering fire of the defense platforms. The enemy transports had now arrived and were making their descent. Osiris' defense platforms changed targets and began firing on the transports. Three transports were destroyed and two more suffered heavy damage before reaching the surface.

The transports opened their doors and the enemy forces flooded out. Defense turrets warmed up their barrels and unloaded right into the enemy mass before coming under artillery fire. Osiris' own forces moved in to back up the turrets. The two armies clashed in close quarters fighting. Bots and tanks exploded as rounds found their mark and high explosive artillery shells ripped apart the enemy's and Osiris' forces alike.

The enemy had neglected to bring any air support and Osiris' bombers and gunships moved in to engage. The bombers released their payloads and retreated before the enemy anti-air tanks could get a lock, but the gunships were not so lucky. Missiles filled the air and brought down most of the gunships before they could retreat.

Osiris' orbital forces seemed to be doing well until a new enemy wave arrived, this time with laser satellites in tow. The enemy ground forces had broken through the base's first line of defense and had destroyed many of the defense platforms. A new wave of Osiris' forces had just rolled off the factories and were sent to reinforce the second defensive line. Orbital wrecks from were crashing down everywhere, demolishing anything that happened to be below.

The second wave of enemy orbital forces cut through Osiris' fighters, but were stopped dead by the last of the orbital frigates. The laser satellites could not advance far enough to attack the teleporter without getting shot down, so they found new targets at the second defensive line.

The bright blue bolts streaked down from the skies and impacted the defenses, instantly annihilating anything in the blast radius. The combined fire from Osiris' frigates and the defense platforms was finally starting to push back the enemy's orbital forces, but the enemy ground forces were crushing the defenses. The second defensive line had fallen, but the missile was nearing completion. The enemy assault had temporarily relented so that they could regroup and launch a single, massive final assault.

The third and final line of defense was immediately around the teleporter. Rings of defense turrets and platforms stood guard to hold back the relentless enemy assault. The last of Osiris' forces retreated to the teleporter. Engineers were quickly erecting last minute defenses to but some more time. Combat fabricators were scurrying about, repairing the battle scarred tanks and bots. This was the last stand. Everything depended on buying enough time to get the missile launched.

    ~

"This is it", the commander thought, "I will finally wipe out this scum and claim the system for the Legion." Weeks of planning had led to the massive all-in assault of his foe's moon base. All had gone according to plan, more or less. He did not expect that the third transport would get shot down, or that the orbital defenses would be so tough, but that did not matter now. The commander had his foe right where he wanted him. Their backs were against the wall with no hope of victory.

He watched the satellite feed as his tanks moved in towards the last line of defense. The opponent's own forces moved out to meet them. The foe's forces were putting up a good fight, but he would clearly win with more than enough tanks left to destroy the final defensive line. Just after the last of the opponent's tanks were destroyed, a fleet of bombers screamed out of the remains of the base. They flew right over his tanks, but dropped no bombs.

"He can't even get a simple bomber A.I. right", the commander thought to himself. The bombers were quickly taken care of by his anti-air tanks before they could retreat. The base was now in sight. His tanks stopped at maximum range and chose their targets. But before the first volley could be fired, a missile launch was detected from behind the defensive line.

"A final desperate attempt to try and kill me? The fool, he would need more than one."

The arc of the missile seemed to be heading towards the terran planet, but it curved and flew towards the massive formation of tanks.

"NO! That wretched scum will pay for this."

The missile impacted and the entire force was destroyed in an instant along with a large chunk of the defenses. The teleporter sustained heavy damage, but was still operational.

    The opponent survived another attack.

    For now.

Sorry for the rather long delay, I have been busy recently with a few things. Anyways, enjoy!

The next part may take a while. I'm going to be busy this week and won't have much time during the weekend. I will try to get another part out, but no promises.
