Currently the only way to reliably rotate the camera is by using the keyboard (either n for resetting the rotation or ctrl+arrow keys).

I think I am not alone if I state that ideally you would want to be able to control the camera solely using the mouse.

So here is my suggestion regarding this issue:

While playing, I intuitively tried to rotate the view by zooming out (till there was slots of "space" on the screen) and then middle-mouse-clicking on the "space" to the left or right and dragging up or down.

So, this is what I propose :p

If you click on the planet, you navigate the view just like you do now. But if you zoom out far enough to have a decent amount of space on screen you can drag up or down on the side of the screen to rotate the view. If you click in the planet, it still works as usual. This should not interfere with the navigation as it is now and work rather intuitively, since most people will click on the planet if they want to turn it around, anyways, but add the option to fully control the camera without having to use the keyboard :)

What do you think ? Do you have different suggestions, can you think of improvements to this idea ?

Is there some magicia.....modder that wants (is able to ?) make a rough implementation of this idea so we can test it ?

Or is it already possible to rotate the camera and I haven't noticed yet....

Yeah one of my first griefs with the game was the inability to rotate the camera with my mouse - I ended up turning pole lock on to solve my constant confusion with getting lost on my own planet.

Alternatively it might be as simple as binding a modifier to the middle mouse button to make it rotate the camera instead of panning. (e. g. ctrl+mmb = rotate)
