If you don't have something to add to a thread, please.. just let it go. If the thread matters, it will stay in sight without the need of a bump. If it doesn't, well.. that's thread darwinism for you. :)

Can't even bump this thread? ;-)

Edit: should be added to the forum rules.

If you're talking about me, I generally don't bump unless I feel I have something to add.

Every mod on the internet seems to have different standards for what is acceptable bumping practice so I just go by the feel of whether it continues the discussion meaningfully instead of trying to decipher that.

Ehem... It was actually Herbert Spencer, not Darwin.

    Just saying...

If you really want your thread to stay bumped, start a flamewar in it.

There's also the issue of other time zones. If i were to post something at 8 am it might be off the front page before the Australians get to see it. That said, it's very hard to enforce this. Opinions may vary wildly on what constitutes a legitimate contribution

No, I literally mean posts of "bump". In addition to inducing forum rage in me, they're just useless posts.

:( There was that time you bumped over a dozen threads at once...

I thought about that, but honestly, it's not a rule so much as just decent posting etiquette. If you don't have something to say.. why are you posting? That's all. Just.. setting the bar a little higher, as I tend to do. :)

    Herbert Spencer bumped a thread?

    *bump*
    Just kiddin'

In my humble opinion, however, there should be some exceptions, like when there is nothing much to add to the topic, but the topic itself might be an interesting read.

Like some interesting guide, or my story thread in my signature, (though, I'm not sure if the majority here finds it any interesting, heh).

This is what the New Posts view is for. Of course, it'd help if Uber added the XenoForo plugin that lets you exclude certain sub-forums.

#5 covers it, it's essentially a “me too” post.

LOL to be fair it was at the request of another forum user and I (for the most part) meaningfully added to each post. We are supposed to comment on old threads instead of starting new 1s right? I used the search function, was I not doing that right? ;) :p

Yep. Spam the like button all you want, but "me too" posts don't add anything that you can't do by clicking "like."
