Would be cool to have a Galactic War in the Solar System. Good idea.

You sir are illogical or uninformed, google for RANDOM and SEED first, or be my guest and spend eternity looking for correct combination of seed, planet size, water level etc. Maybe you get something.

However i hope we can do custom maps (not random ones) in the future, then there will be earth.

just throwing this out. Earth is a terribly imbalanced map. Ask the Nazis that lost because of it. Or napoleon. Or the monguls. Earth creates unbalanced fights that cost people losses.

still want an earth replica though.

Haha, "we lost World War 2 because Earth is imba!" said the Nazis

To create planet that looks like earth you don't need to store the entire planet, just a few textures. Specificly you would need a height map and a biome map. You would create the major surface shape with the height map then apply a little noise to get detail and then use your standered random feature distribution with the pre-made biome map. If you wanted to do specific features, like the wall of china, you could do a few custom brushes. This would be scaleable to multiple planet sizes and would only take a few MB of data.

For reference: If you want to know how much memory a planet takes, open a resource monitor before you build a planet and take note of how much ram is used, build the planet, and then check your ram again. The difference is how much that planet would take to save in mesh format. A 1200 radius planet with no water takes about 6 gigs.

I was thinking of the unbalanced sizes of land masses, the odd ways the seas wrap, the way mountains tend to block to encourage turtling for some but not all.

I'm sure someone will make the solar system, obviously not perfectly scaled, but made to be fun to play on. I just know that when I play on that, I'm going straight to pluto...'s moon :D

Not to mention those annoying turtles who hide behind 'great walls' and such like...

well I was thinking of India and Chile. Both walled against with mountains. Both fortifyable and when naval built becomes covered in tandem.

As far has map editing goes; if we had the planet generation code, then we could make a reverse map editor.

IE: We draw something out and the editor would spit out the seed settings for the closest possible match.

Guys you simply dont know how pseudorandom random works. To make earth you need some numbers that you feed to generation algorithm. It is probably not that hard to find what numbers you want to get earth like map as result. But can those numbers be produced by any seed from current rnd routine? It is not like this pseudorandom thing can produce every possible stream of numbers. It can do only some that only look like random.

So to get earth map we need full planet editor, with either vector mapping for areas (like where is wateer, hills, forrest are etc) or just bitmaps that are imported/exported from game. There is no magical seed that makes earth.

I think the idea is that Uber deliberately create one as an Easter egg... Your correct that the system won't automatically do it- they'd probably have to get their art team to sort it out. It might be nice however for them to hide it under some particular settings for someone to stumble upon.

Yup such easter egg would be awesome, but if they code that they as well may let us make custom planets.
And when we are on easter eggs planet, i demand vogon construction fleet that randomly destroys moons, every time anybody uses 42 as seed.

I was thinking 42 would be the perfect number and then I read the last 2 posts above. Clearly it IS the perfect number :p
