Disappearing units in orbit...

So i was playing against the AI to try and smash a planet, when i realised the units i had sent to the asteroid had gone missing. Using the chrono cam, i was able to see that just as they hit the ring arounf the asteroid (im assuming thats the orbit ring) they just vanished. I then googled the problem to no avail, and realised the ai had destroyed my base (not bothered about that really) but because my commander had vanished the game continued but i couldnt do anything... This has happened several times now, just wondered if anyone had a fix for this?

Nope, never made it to the orbit around the asteroid

I too have had a game where my commander was lost in space, so that the game ended in a tie.
