I host a box in the Internap Datacenter in ATL, GA. I would like to put MNC on that box, maybe more than one instance. Where would I obtain the Dedicated Server files to do this? I have looked a good bit and cant seem to find them. Any help would be appreciated. -Catalyst
I dunno how dedicated servers normally work, but it seems here that you have to make your own 'server' and select dedicated. From what I've read on the forums, you'll have to use a different account to keep the server running. However, I'm not sure about this, so you mgiht want to check around the forums.
dedicated server files are not released (yet), you will need to install the game on the box in order to run a dedicated server on it.
Any updates or recent developments on this? Will there be dedicated server files available anytime soon?
Right now the only way is through steam ,but its pretty easy to get the files. You can log in with your main steam account and download the files. Then use the command line feature that makes the server not depend on steam. I went the route of buying a copy of the game for each server box on a different steam account , it really helps with the updates. If you dont like steam running all the time you can shut it down .
i wonder if steam is really needed in order to update the server. my dedicated servers are using -STEAM_DEDSERVER and steam is not running on the machine. however when i went to update the server steam did not download anything. after validating no files were downloaded. i started one of the server instances and i went and updated the game. without steam running. seems like the server downloaded the patch on it's own. can any dev comment on this?
My steam accounts did a very fast download, once I started the servers again they did their own update. FYI I am running separate installs for each server , IE every server has its own folder. Each game server did the splash screen update before starting. if you look in your steam Dir you will see MNC2 depot.ncf was updated. as well as install script. If you look in the patches Dir you will see a lot of updates. I know these files where not touched by the server launching because I use the steam folder as the master and run a batch file to up the the folders of the game servers with the changed files.
I have two servers running, and it works out of one installation directory. Update six was 80mb for me on my computer, but 40mb on my dedicated server (hosted in a data center) which made no sense >_< If you start server instance 1, 2, 3 etc. all at the same time they will all attempt to patch. If you run just one it'll patch, and then the others won't have to patch. You cannot start a server unless steam is running. I set my account to offline mode, and the server starts up fine. Whenever I update I just have to switch to online mode. Not really a HUGE hassle for me. Though I'd love for the game to be able to patch on it's own automatically that'd be awesome
Hopefully they get a better solution figured out shortly after launch. I don't think how this is done currently will be sufficient for the widespread use a significantly larger community would need.
