Hello, Just got the beta. Installed. "PA stopped working." Recently "upgraded" to windows 8.1. Machines 3 or 4 years old but it ticks all the boxes. Any idea's why it's not working? DxDiag file attached. Any help much appreaciated. Cheers Ginge
Are you able to upload PA log file too? C:\Users\"YourUserName"\AppData\Local\Uber Entertainment\Planetary Annihilation\log\PA-00-00-00.000.txt "Click sort by date so the most recent one is at the top, And post that one here."
Few months AMD website got notice that their legacy drivers doesn't support Windows 8. It's disappear now, but you can met any kind of issues with those drivers. But as long as I know few players still reported that it's working. If you're not installed driver from AMD website try to remove existing one and then install those: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/legacy?product=legacy2&os=Windows 8 - 64 E.g I mean "Latest Beta Driver". They'll have same version and date like now, but for some reason they're different than those that Microsoft distribute. PS: AMD legacy drivers only support WDDM 1.1 while Windows 8 introduces WDDM 1.3 already.
Wow thanks for the quick response. Maxpowerz the log file attached. SXX - I have had a few problems trying to install drivers from the amd website. I fact I spent a day trying to get the catalist control centre to work (still doesn't). Windows doesn't seem to let me install over drivers that it thinks are more up to date. It's not in my skillset to figure out how to force it to but i'll give it another go and let you know. Thanks again
It's the driver crashing the game. I will try to post an easy to understand step by step to help update the video card manually. If you can, my easiest suggestion is, . 1. slide out the charm bar, click settings (the gear). 2. goto control panel (at the top of next slide out menu) 3. By default it display's the window in category's, in the top right there is a "Veiw By" label with a drop down box. set that to small or large icon. 4. select the device manager icon that you can now see 5. in this window there is a tree of all your hardware, go to "Display adapter's" click the triangle next to it. 6. it pop's out the tree with your video card, right click on your video card and select "Uninstall" 7. after you have uninstalled the card install the latest windows 8 ati beta driver , i will link for you http://www2.ati.com/drivers/beta/amd_catalyst_13.4_legacy_beta_vista_win7_win8.exe
Forgot to add .. Do not restart computer after uninstall video card driver.. when windows reboot it will automatically install it's own driver.. you need to uninstall the current driver then install beta driver before rebooting computer
Also you can look at this topic: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2347620 And try to use modified drivers from here: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=372799
Try modified drivers, but I doubt such old card will work well on newer OS because AMD abandon it's updates. So use older OS or buy new GPU.
I tried the uninstall and then to install the beta drivers, i recall i've tried this previously. Damned things wouldn't install the actual display drivers. Madness. Oh well i'll read through this modded drivers info but i think you're right. I've been holding off upgrading the rest of my machine until i absolutely needed to but being a massive TA and SC fan i suppose it's a reasonable excuse. Thanks again for putting the time in, i'll let you know if i make any progress.
We only want for you to be able to enjoy the game too I will do some research into ways to force the driver to install. I have a few idea's for you to try but they require some meduim to advance computer skill's to explain in short. I will work on an easy way of explaining it , or see if someone can make and post a short video clip on how to do it. One idea is , Downloading the most up to date legacy driver for windows 7, then editing the .INF and putting in the Vendor ID from your card to force the driver to install. The windows 7 driver will work in windows 8 but wont support all the functionality maybe, Other ideas are the "Have Disk" approach (google Have Disk install driver ) you unpack the driver to a folder then go into device manager and force it to install by pointing directly to the install file for the hardware , this is difficult but can be done easier than my hack the .inf way. If you want i will try to explain these way's in detail. i just have very limited internet and time left. If my internet drop out i will ask maybe if someone else could assist further with these idea's or suggest better idea's for me. My honest opinion is SXX is right,, maybe best thing is get a copy of window 7 and make a small partition for it and install windows 7 on sepearate partition or drive if you have 2 in your pc. Window 7 64bit is much better suited to your system than windows 8 , The gain from going to window 8 is 0 in this case maybe the OS is bit faster but not much for your hardware. windows 8 would benefit you better if you had an i3 to i7 cpu and hd 5xxx or better cards or nVidia gt 500 or better card.
Hey guys just wanted to say i managed to get the 13.1 drivers to install using the have disk and installing from the unpacked folder directly. (after uninstalling the windows own drivers) Not sure if this will be over ridden when i reboot but shall see. The luncher worked and i get as far as the login page then tabbed out to tell you. (I was pretty excited and pleased with myself.) Will let you know how well it actually runs haha. Thanks again.
