Would be an awesome idea. Imagine not only catapulting or single unit freights for large units from tier 2-3 and experimentals, but to also convoy garrisoned units on outer-system based
On the note of space-related items. Since we can seemingly move our resources around between planets freely, it makes sense we could make use of them in orbit. So an orbital factory could also be something done down the line (in fact, it could be what builds a multi-unit interplanetary transport, among some other things). Naturally, the difficulty of building in space with nanolathing (or whatever the new name for the green nano-building-goo we spray around is) would justify space construction to be a bit more on the expensive and slower side. Other things built by a space-bound factory could of course include some endgame things like orbital warships (which would be difficult to launch into space on a rocket). Though perhaps the advanced air factory or a T3 air factory could build one that can fly in the atmosphere too. This one would be more versatile due to being able to enter the atmosphere and engage fast-moving units, but would be weak compared to other ships of the same cost and size due to space taken up by extra engines and systems needed for both space and atmospheric operation. It would be better then nothing however, if you had the Advanced or T3 air factory needed for it but are still in need of finishing up your launch pad. Next suggestion: Assuming there isn't one something like this already and I just didn't look hard enough, it would be nice to be able to hide the planet's surface and units (and their icons) on it temporarily behind a half-translucent sphere or something, so that objects in orbit stand out better.
I see you're new here, and welcome. You should do a search before posting in accordance with forum rules. Things like this have been discussed before. There will be way to transport units between planets. Right now the known methods will be the unit cannon and teleporter. Deep space combat and large orbital warships are a confirmed no. Orbital views are under development and were actually changed in yesterday's patch. Check 'em out.
BE MORE SPECIFIC brianpurkiss. Actually, you were really specific actually, but you missed a point or hinted at it being no when it is yes. Unit transportation will be both "common" and "innovative". Right now, it is just a placeholder so you can move planets at all. Release plans, they want there to be a cannon to fire units between planets, rockets to launch units to planets, teleporters to allow units to simply walk onto another planet, and multi-unit-ships that allows multiple units to travel in group (like a current lander that picks up several units instead of one). All that, besides the already possible idea of "building them once there", such as sending a single or group of engineers and building several factories and have units pour from the factories, and such as building them from orbital and dropping them on the planet (last suggestion unconfirmed, just a thought). Also discussed, and partially confirmed, is land transporters. Basically the multi unit orbital transport they are going to make down the line, but applied to an airplane filled with bots or an APC vehicle filled with bots, or something to that extent.
They don't plan yet, past anything more than maybe testing it once and seeing how it goes, to do anything with "giant robots". The complaint is, it takes away from the "smaller robots", when one can already make an army of those it makes that useless when a giant robot can destroy them all; alternatively if it was too weak then nobody would make the giant robot instead. t3 if anything, is limited to tactical use superweapons (nukes, space-lasers, jet-propulsed-planets)
The space laser is a poor excuse for an experimental- ok maybe I'm just biased because I think it's underwhelming and ugly . It should be twice the size and really boom when it fires/the rounds hit the ground. At the moment it feels like shooting an over powered laser pistol from space. I hope in the future uber can find a way of incorporating balanced experimentals, which fulfil a specific roll and don't eliminate the usefulness of t1/2 units in combat.
I rarely use orbital as my choice for game-ender, as well as not using nuke actually. When I do, I usually get results. Maybe that is just because I scout and snipe. I get commander kills with it and they never see it coming because it just kills them out of nowhere. They have a nuke almost finished and I just pencil-eraser it away and it must make them upset that they think their nuke glitch-died or just disappeared for no reason. I am not happy about making them upset, but such is the purpose of the space laser.
Oh don't get me wrong. The laser sat is very effective. It's an ideal tool for commander sniping/strategic targeting. I was simply saying I will never class the laser sat as an experimental as I find it's appearance, effects and sounds to be totally underwhelming. At the moment I don't think it's appearance is right at all- it's one of the few units which I would actually increase in size (I'm a big advocate of an across the board unit size reduction).
I think it is a "dynamite comes in small packages" kind of thing myself. My first thought was that it was underwhelming. My thought after successful use is how unfair that probably was. So yeah, my thought AS WELL were for the space laser to be slightly bigger and to fire a steady beam of destruction instead of a "pew pew pew" effect. I wouldn't even mind it firing the "uber cannon". Something that makes it look like it's destruction is glorious. Right now, it grew on me. I would have no problems either way. I suppose it would be more newbie friendly and "awesome" for it to look cooler when it fires and be larger or more "sinister" looking model.
I would prefer a warhammer style lance strike myself for the effect side. Also, I'm assuming they will tweak these units a lot, including them not having a front so they can move universally in every direction, and not like an 18ton lorry with a sleepy driver.
Exactly, that's what I'm looking for. A model and effects that makes its price tag seem suitable AND makes newbs easily recognise it is designed to be a very powerful unit. Plus who doesn't like more "awseome". Ive not played 40k in a lonnnng time. Your talking lance as in solid anti-tank weapon mounted twin linked on the side of land raiders? I hope they do plenty of tweaks/really think hard about how the laser sat looks!
Yeah pretty much. Warhammer has way bigger orbital versions of those. There is a pretty good example in the Space Marine CG trailer, you can see it at 1:16 on the video below.
Yeah nice! I love the whole laser and THEN the destructive pulse travelling down the beam. Much better than what we have at the moment.
Yup, it's a brilliant effect. And let's add a small shockwave that slowly travels outwards from the strike point. Of course we don't want it to be OP, but it'd look great.
