Newbie question - how to zoom in on planet

I just started my first game vs. AI. The game started, and there was a planet in front of me. I selected an area to build a base, but then I couldn't zoom in on the planet to figure out exactly where I wanted to build metal extractors, etc.

How do you zoom in?

Use the scroll wheel.

If you zoom out too far, you'll enter the celestial view. To zoom back in on the planet, make sure your mouse is hovering over the planet before zooming in.

to note, the mouse curser needs to pe "on planet" to zoom out properly, and into the geoscape view...
if you have the curser on one side outside the planet on the border of the screen, the mousewheeling action will just rotate the planet ...
