I was happy to try the beta until i discovered that it's alway on(internet connection), i don't know if i will continue playing the beta but please remove that anti consumer thing for release.
Game will be DRM-free after release, but for now there is multiple serious reasons why you can only play on developer servers.
the Beta does require you to connect to Uber's Servers that Host the games, it's not actually an Anti-consumer/DRM thing, it's just a side effect currently. At Release Even the Clients will be able to host 'Servers' locally in order to facilitate 'Offline' play, but if they were to do that now it would basically result in the unfinished game being pirated with nothing Uber could do about it. It is also good for Testing as Uber has access to all kinds of Server logs and such that they might not get if everyone just hosted their own servers. Mike
Also from what I read, the game is supposed to use abstract server memory so that it doesn't take up as much memory on your own computer, I don't know how that plays into singleplayer though
Well whatever the server does for a multiplayer game the "host client" for a single player/offline will do the same. The idea is that instead of connecting to a server, the Game just creates one on your own machine. Mike
This is only part of the benefits. The main thing is version management. It gives Uber full control over what version you play, plus direct maintenance of the server code so they can easily log crashes and such.
I see you're new to the forums, and welcome! Before posting you should check out the FAQ (which answers this question) or do a search. Always online is beta only. Uber is retaining close control of the servers – for now. After game launch we'll be able to play offline, host LAN parties, and even host our own servers.
