So, here is my concise summary of metal planets: Structured. defensible, great place for air to strut its mobility in style.

...and there is a secret purpose about them for destroying planets that has yet to be unlocked.

    Wait. What? THATS AWESOME

    My question here is:

Are there any sneak peeks/in-depth discussions on how this is going to work and when it is going to come out?

Haven't seen any on the forums, do any of the video updates have something similar?

PS if this is in the wrong place, sorry :)

i would just nuke it from orbit, f*** its defensive capability. I havnt seen any discussion regarding metal planets unfortunately, much like what ubers plans on the new units are.

so far only speculation as far as i know.

That being said: Giant metal sphere with trenches running along it with circular depressions in it. Hmmmm, that sounds familiar...

We don't know what they will be.

And speculation that they can destroy planets is incorrect.

All we know is that there will be "ancient technology" that can be "activated." Could be something simple like defensive turrets that can be turned on or efficient power plants or something.

I'm guessing they won't have deathstar like capabilities - but again, we don't know what the "ancient technology" will be.

    It's not incorrect, merely unconfirmed.

A month ago I'd have gladly take a bet against your guess...
Time changes my sureties however. Uber is too cagy with information for my liking.

That's the closest I quote I can find that could be construed as 'confirmation'.

They have alluded to Death-Star-esque capabilities for Metal planets for some time. There's not been much discussion on this and other higher issues because at the moment, gameplay is still restricted to a single planet for all practical purposes, and we're all working to get the low-level gameplay to an acceptable level first before we start worrying about this sort of thing ;)

If it can't blow up a planet, a lot of people are going to be disappointed.
This functionality is implied, I guess. Even uber guys call those things "Death stars".

Come on..let's make the metal planet a scale 1 or 2 and activate it's core for sum serious death star like planet destroying capabilities!

I've tried. I nuked everyone, made them go off-planet, then looked around for the on switch.

    No cigar. :(

To the contrary it has been STRONGLY implied, both when metal planets were first announced and in live streams since, that they'll be Death Stars.
As Teod said uber devs have called them 'Death Stars' several times.
So far I would imagine the poles will have some key role to play: perhaps building some expensive structure over an access port (not the most interesting but probably the easiest implementation). To be honest, with KEWs in the game I don't really think Death Star lazors will add that much, but hey, they're cool so I won't complain.

More ways to destroy planets is always good. The more often it happens, the better. :p

    Do you have some links?

I really hope it isn't a death star.

    That will kind of suck..

    Unless we have Red Squadron

    Thread idea.

While that it's been implied that the metal planets will have some sort of function to that of a Death Star, we really haven't been told specifically.

Best thing I'd be able to say is to go through the live-streams, I know that doesn't help much but like I said at the start, the idea wasn't really more then just teased at.

Correction! On the initial KS page, it said that metal planets will be sort of like, forgotten space stations, now if this means it will work like a DS, is hard to say.

If that is the case though, I'd hope that it'd take an ungodly amount of power to basically cold-boot the whole thing. Like, 40-50 T2 power generators, maybe even a special metal-specific T3? (Okay maybe not quite THAT many, but you get the point. :p) Only reason for that is, if this thing is able to destroy planets, and be basically an insta-win for who ever gets to it first, I'd want it to be hard to actually get up and running, almost to the point of being near pointless to bother with in a small 3-5 planet single game.

Now with the Galactic war on the other hand, that could be where it's actually more useful.

That's the thing. I don't like insta win strategies like that. Then the whole point of the game is for everyone to see if they can do the same thing first. Which is why I don't play with multiple planets right now, since first one to get off planet wins.

I really hope it's just some improvements to the planet, like power generators or really powerful laser turrets. Then it isn't a matter of who gets to the planet first. Multiple players on the planet can utilize the benefits of the metal planet.

Either way, Uber has probably already decided what these planets will do a long time ago.

We haven't actively implemented any of the metal planet battle systems yet so you could say it's still up in the air.

The basic idea is that you would activate and control these systems by building things on control points. I don't want to get too specific about it but you can see a number of ways this could be cool. It's just not as high on the priority list as a bunch of other stuff though.

If metal planets give death star functionality, can we have red squadron?

Can we have red squadron regardless? You see an enemy on a metal planet, you just send your orbital fighters to attack him and sneak red squadron in there also. One torpedo into the reactor exhaust later and.....

    I am only partially joking.
