Upgrading in PA is destroying the old building and putting the new one in its place. True upgrading doesn't make that much sense since you only have 2 tiers (I know, its called "advanced" not T2).

Yeah i definitely dont like the current energi generators as well.

I like solar panels and other stuff that minds sense, like windmills.

I think you're looking at it wrong. If you want the best of the best in solar power, don't just take the sun from the ground, concentrate it.

And guess what? It doubles as a superweapon!

Have to bring that thread back up again, yet under a different aspect.

What a surprise, but currently energy looses all relevance if you manage to turtle on a planet. Even if the ammunition concept and energy upkeep would ever be implemented properly, there would still be the issue that neither of them is limited properly.

Why would you ever spread out just for energy? That gas giant fusion reactor thing, it's completely pointless if you can get all the energy you want from a tiny turtle planet already.

Covering the whole planet under umbrellas and such?
Not a difficult thing at all, even if they did cost a proper upkeep, the current pgens still would be able to power them with ease. But you don't even need to cover the whole planet. Only what is attackable.

All you need energy for currently is for fabrication, the only role it serves is an onetime investment of metal to power more fabrication. Building space efficiency or ground control doesn't even matter at all, as there is only one fit-them-all type which naturally provides sufficient energy for every possible task even in the smallest environments.

At the current state, you could REMOVE pgens all together and no one would even care. Since they fulfill no real purpose at all, they are just an annoying routine without any meaning, except for crashing your economy if you failed to build them early enough.

But apart from that, they don't fulfill any real purpose. They are not even legit targets for snipe attacks since they can all be stuffed inside the base.

One thing in particular that I think would make solar an interesting option is being able to set the daylength/rotation of planets in the planet editor, so that different planets have different day/night lengths. Solar panels built on planets with particularly long days/nights would either be impractical unless built around the entire circumference, while very short day planets might be able to make do with a large amount of energy storage to last overnight.

Another thing: Currently I don't think there's anything resembling seasons in the game, in that planets seem to spin on upright axis (maybe I'm wrong?). Another interesting dimension to solar, if planets were tilted, would be for day lengths to be more extreme at the planet's poles, as it orbits around the sun. This would mean solar panels along the equator would be much more consistent and practical, and as a result maybe gives players more reason to fight over particular regions besides just mass density.

Ah, right. Again, I'm not familiar with the game, because I'm not participating in the beta/alpha, but I hope the situation with metal extractors is not a la TA, where you'd reclaim/ctrl+D the T1 to replace it with a moho mine.

Its much easier, now you don't need to reclaim, you just build the advanced one over the old one and all the leg work is free.

In regards to the op: I'd like to see this, but in the form where you only build other power stations in limited fashion as an efficiency upgrade under specific circumstances, but the main method of generating power stays the asme as now (and is not totally eclipsed by these other methods). Otherwise we're looking at a nightmare for the balancing team and lots of redundant power generators.
