An idea for Orbital Battles

    Can you skip to the "How it Will Work" part?
    Anything titled "Units" will need to be buried under so many 'Subject to Change' disclaimers that I think writing it would only serve as fan fiction, and "Execution" sounds like it would be entirely under Uber's jurisdiction.

    Click the "postings" tab and read through all of neutrino's posts in "Orbital Units - 2 directions". He's already outlined a lot of his thoughts there on orbital. If your idea is far and away from this, you are better off posting your ideas in the mod section. I'm not saying you have a bad idea, but the devs are most likely going a different direction with orbital.

    So before I both going any further I have one question. From what I'm getting you guys don't want to have orbital spaceships and cruisers and epic orbital battles like in the pics? If that is so, why?

    Orbital is a support layer, it is not supposed to overshadow the warfare on the planet (like it does in Star Wars and other games/movies). Having cruisers/destroyers/battleships in space is no different than the water navy on the surface, which means this route adds nothing new to the game other than another layer to fight on.

    We're playing Planetary Annihilation, not Deepspace Annihilation.

    Nobody has problems with the idea in general, we just don't want it here.

    Hmmm...... well when they said that they were going to have orbital stuff and some of the things Neutrino would say like, "No I meant nuke the concept of orbital from the game. Any layer with only 20 units doesn't belong in this game." So from that I figured that they wanted to make it really big. I think they still do, but with how everyone is talking they may not do that. If they don't I will be very sad and angry.

    Just because they want a lot of units doesn't mean they are going to be ships and fighters.

    Like the more experienced posters said, just look up that space thread by neutrino and use that as a starting point. Don't get depressed, find new inspiration in what the devs have been discussing.

    requesting quite kindly for people to please shut down these orbital threads... We've already discussed every single possible variation on the concept of orbital to the point where we didn't just drive the horse into the ground, we built a pyramid to house its dead body as well.

    • underground units,
    • upgrades,
    • T3,
    • veterancy,
    • special resources,
    • etc.
    There's lots of things that have been discussed over the past year (holy crap, has it been that long already). Everybody thinks of the same things, but everybody also thinks they're the first person to think of it.

    Ignoring all the pictures, there's essentially no detail as to what you're proposing. I have no idea what your idea is other than "orbital battles should be cool". Can you provide some more information?

    Your idea of boring is really childish. What's boring about real space exploration?

    As much as I like the space opera idea of space warfare as WWII in space (Yamato 2199 is a great anime you should watch if you are into that kind of thing) I think that would be more boring in this game because it would just be Water+air 2.0. YO DAWG I HEARD YOU LIKE NAVAL WARFARE SO I PUT A WHOLE NOTHER WATER LAYER ON TOP OF THE PLANET SO YOU CAN FIGHT TWO NAVAL BATTLES AT ONCE! /xibit

    What's the point? If you want battleships blasting each other while fighters zip around, just build some naval units on a water planet. Space should be different, different is not boring, same is boring.

    Hey guys. I'm sorry for not thinking about some things be for I posted. I thank you for letting me know this and even though you all sliced my throat, gutted my body, and then burned me (lol) I thank you. I love the community and I will be playing this game as soon as it comes out.

    Good to see there are people whose spines haven't been replaced with a wet noodle.

    Just flesh out your proposal, think about it from as many angles as you can and make sure you also consider how the proposal affects the rest of the game's elements or mechanics, then come back and present it in full(I find for big posts I like to use notepad to handle most of the typing) and while it won't guarantee that peopel will like your proposal, it will be discussed at the same level of detail as you've put into it. The thing I've noticed about communities for this particular subgenre of RTS is that you tend to get a lot of really smart guys, both in terms of real life and just in general game design type stuff. So threads that have been thrown together and showing a lack of research and such get chewed out really quick, but as I said, if you put effort and thought into it, you'll generally get it back from other users.
