Using the keyboard to select skills is WAAAYYY faster than using the mouse. You might not believe it until you try it. The reason is that you don't have to wait for the GUI. Just hit 3 or 4 keys quickly, and you're done. I get out the door faster than anyone else, and I can upgrade skills in the field with much less risk (clutch gunner reload or tank heal FTW). Put your skill upgrade bindings on the numpad (that thing on the right of the keyboard, unless you have a laptop or some compact nonsense). Bind the skills on 2, 4, 8, and 6, according to their positions on the GUI. Open skill menu: Numpad + Buy blue skill: Numpad 4 Buy yellow skill: Numpad 8 Buy red skill: Numpad 6 Buy grey skill: Numpad 2 For example, to upgrade charge and passive for a tank at the start of the game, just press +62+ Give it a try. It's so much faster!
I can do it pretty quickly with just the default layout (using the keyboard), but thanks for the suggestion. Now, what I'd really like to have, would be the option to buy skills without having to open the buy menu in the first place. On the PC you have plenty of buttons, so why not add 4 keymappings dedicated to just buying skills so you can clutch your passive without even stopping for a millisecond?
It could be just me, but I'd think that upgrading skills using that method would be infinitely more dangerous. With the mouse and B key, I can already buy all the skills I need in under a second and be out of the menu, and on top of it I still have my hand on the mouse in case someone starts attacking me. I get that you are trying to save time, and if you were extremely well practiced in swapping from the numpad/mouse then this might work. But the extra half second it saves is hardly a timeframe that's going to make a difference in terms of the entire match, and rarely is that extra half second going to save you from certain death...
I just use the default setup. It's super fast and does not require you to remove your hand from the mouse. Simply hit b with your thumb resting on the spacebar, immediately hit 1-4 as needed with your ring, middle, and pointer fingers, b again, move back to WASD home position.
but then u have to hit B again. best solution here is to just have these upgrades quickly mapped without that menu. Think of quick weapon switching in game like counter strike. Imagine hitting 2 [mouseclick] and such all the time.
Ah, forgot 2nd b click. Thanks for pointing that out. It would be nice to have single click bindings for upgrades but I'm fine with how I do it now.
You play counterstrike without quickswitch? That was the first option I always turned on whenever I booted up any Valve game.
I didn't say that. If you look, I said the best thing to do is have a key mapped to buy a certain skill. We don't need a menu... much like counter strike doesn't need a menu for guns and switching weapons. get it?
There's a reason there's a buy menu for as much reason there is to be on the ground to open it: You're supposed to be vulnerable buying it. Anti-exploit rules #8: No Tank, you can't take a medkit: Buying skills should be a tactical choice when you do so: Otherwise the support and Tank can both instantly heal on the press of a button 2 times a match cash permitting, by buying their passive skills.
I prefer my binds better, it is limited to the mice that have tilt feature. Now you can built turrets and upgrade skills very quickly, I basically can walk past a turret and build it. I have the g500 binds changed that tilt the the keybind Home and End, the useless sensitivity buttons are bound to Page Up and Page Down. The odd middle button on the thumb is bound to Enter. I use this setup all the time, its useful for browsing the web too
Agree it's faster on the keyboard, although I haven't found the ideal solution for me. Found B a bit of a leap, so I'm experimenting with F3, as I've remapped the buys to 3-6 in order to move the weapon-switching buttons to 1 and 2, so F3 has kind of a natural roll: F3-6-F3 at the start of the game and I'm usually the first one out the door. More correct is probably to just wait and upgrade in mid-air as I fall off the spawn ring, I guess... I've also been forced to pry the tilda key off with a knife and move the score screen up to F1. There's no achievment for dying in those screens, but lemme tell ya, if there was, I'd have 'em plenty, and how.
I'd prefer if I could use WASD for skill buying. It simply makes so much sense visually and intuitively!
Putting some keybinds to the right of the keyboard so you either have to drop your mouse or move your left hand across the whole keyboard? Sounds like you're a console player
1. No, long-time PC player, console hater. Ever since playing the game at PAX I've been wanting to see it come to PC. 2. You can't aim while you're in the menu anyway. The numpad is right next to my mouse hand, so it's only a tiny fraction of a second to move it there and back. This whole thing would sound crazy to me too. When I set up the keys I didn't really expect to like using them, but it's really that much faster and I make a lot less mistakes than trying to use the mouse.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was the exact reason you have to still use the menu on the PC version.
 Reminds me of Forged Alliance (Supreme Commander). There is the buildmode on b and you have to press b then the keys for your buildings and after that b again to close buildmode. I preferred to close buildmode every time automatically after choosing a building and written a mod for this. So I had to press every time b and then the key for the building but I hadn't to close the buildmode manually. This way is much more comfortable for me, because you are able to react faster if you have to react and didn't stay in buildmode with panic. In MNC it's the same with the upgrades. Most the time you skill one skill one level up. Closing the dialog manually is a step which is absolute unnecessary for me. Even when you run into the small pass after spawning, standing there in the middle, open your upgrade menu, reading all the skill details and choosing then one with a left click, the menu should close automatically. (By the way: You shouldn't run into the small passes after spawning and then blocking your teammembers. :roll Should I open a thread in the discussion or feedback forum? P.S.: Who is the guy of you Uber, who don't like to close dialogs automatically?
