What got me really interested about the naming part is less the cool names, many games have cool names... it is rather that there could be one faction that is either plain weird-named or seems to have a memory error. Something weird and funny only very few games have. How about Emperor null from the plaground empire? From the proud NaN empire? After all, the humans or aliens that created them could have been weird! Emperor Scissorpainter would kill you if he knew you laughed about his name or his Snailsquisher Empire! I love this idea, especially Faction 404. Obviously a 404 error would never show up in a future robot, but I'm pretty sure everyone would overlook that. Commander 0x3F60B10C is from Faction 404, which is based on planet null_pointer.

It would be cool if something like this was the default faction name for AI players. If the computer behaves in predictable ways, it's because the commander's AI core was corrupted. Human players would be the machines that are still at least partly sentient.

Time to throw some cool-sounding faction names out there because I've been working with Objective-C more than I prefer lately: void * (pronounce it Void Star because it sounds awesome) SIGABRT Malloc nil NSFaction (ok, now I'm running out of ideas) [planet destroyWithAsteroid:asteroid] (yep i'm done)
The easy answer is the Bacon Faction, The bots just love their bacon, even the grease is useful to them
I am pretty sure that brad means that we could always make our own faction mod with its own lore and units. this would definitely be an awesome faction.
Another take would be imaginary ads that filtered into the commanders memory... commander healthy from the gluten free faction doesn't know his name was an ad!
