I would have backed this on kickstarter if i'd learned of it before it hit steam. oh well. I would just like to say that supcom 1 shined in every way before the expansion and supcom2 added in "mass appeal" simplifications. The only thing it didnt have was a linux port and an lua engine capable of handling the scale. The coolest feature I noted in the supcom early beta removed from later betas and gold was that you could assign many transports to many airlifted units with one grouping gesture instead of several. i presume that was a processing headache but moore's law has ticked off 5+ iterations since then, I hope playability logistics hit that level of smarts when PA is mature. I also wanted to say that since I paid $70 when i learned of this on steam, and would have backed kickstarter had I known more to it, I'd like to license the engine source code at some level if not open sourced, to contribute code refactorings and explore MS AMP and openACC acceleration options to keep the game fresh over the years. my $0.02
That might be a bit of a stretch. Uber has said on multiple occasions that part of their business model involves licensing of their engines. If you've had a look around the forums and watched any of the livestreams (I suggest you do if you want to keep on top of current news and updates), you'll see that Uber are planning to open up a lot of the game for modding purposes, and use modding to generate additional income to continue supporting the game for years to come. I'd recommend going on the Modders lounge and attempting to sign up to their official modders thingy if that's still open. You sound like the kind of chap who would contribute a fair bit to it.
I think he means SupCom 1 published by THQ which includes FA (the stand alone expansion) and SupCom 2 published by Square Enix.
I mean to say FA was garbage, no offense to those who got paid to work on it. sc2 was more of the same clipping the fly's wings. specifics include reduced frame rate in my experience, nuetered t4, and a general sprint to spam OP t2 gun bots.
Nerfing T4 was one of the best things about FA. After all, the game wasn't called Experimental Commander. And of course you're going to get lower framerate when you get better visuals. Duh.
While I agree that the new T2 Bots UEF and Cybran got weren't the best implemented(and don't get me started on the Mercy and Restorer) new units there were plenty of other improvements as well, such as the shift of emphasis from FabFarms to Territory Control really improved the overall gameplay and lead to a much more dynamic game.
