After watching the live stream today, it reinvigorated me for the future PA and its massive scale. Then I thought to myself "wouldn't it be awesome if you could use an asteroid as a starting base when moving to different solar systems in galactic war." This may have been mentioned before, but I felt it was a pretty sweet idea so I posted it as a suggestion So I thought about it a little and here's my idea: -When playing in galactic war, have the ability to spread to different systems using some type of celestial body, being able to use it as a launching pad in the next system. -Have this body be persistent, so that the buildings and battles fought on it remain there throughout it's lifetime, and needing thrusters built on it for it to traverse trillions of kilometers in space. -When sent into a new system be able to control its orbit, such that you could have it orbit a planet, the star, etc. and the eccentricity of it's orbit. -The resources on the asteroid are limited, so that if you run out of metal you will have to claim a new asteroid if you want it to produce that resource. Pros: -You have an asteroid base!!! -Customization. -Bunker buster, if it's possible to invade a system that's already claimed that's well fortified. -Get's the game off to a quick start. Cons: -It would probably completely cut out the early phases of the game (though this might not be a con for some). -Differences in the sizes of asteroids might pose as a balancing issue (being able to have more buildings on the larger asteroids). -Probably some more that I can't think of. I realize this idea is far from perfect, and I'm not sure on how they plan to implement galactic wars presently, but I think that at the least it would be a pretty sweet mod.
I highly doubt there will be anything allowed to persist between battles, but they've also announced almost 0 info on how the galactic war will work, so who knows. What is preventing somebody from evacuating their commander from the "starting asteroid" and ramming it into the enemy commander in the first 5 minutes of a match?
The fact that it'll lose to any number of units at any time? Oh wait, you mean the galactic war thing. Yeah, starting with a whole asteroid is pretty stupid.
I quite like this idea, I think it could also be used in their massive games where players can join in progress games and use it as a way to enter the game. @krakanu if say the asteroid is small, they might populate it with advanced buildings already meaning you would set yourself incredibly far behind. This would effectively remove it or make it an all or nothing attempt. Since the plan as far as I know is to keep all the interplanetary stuff visible all the time, surely the enemy commander could see it coming and jump to a nearby asteroid before the damage is done?
How about each time you travel to a new system the engines blow up from the strain if travel after going in to orbit of a planet of your choice or putting yourself in an asteroid field. This way you can't just join, pop a planet with a free WMD and leave.
