So, i came up with the idea that getting around the Galaxy would take a crap load of time, so i was thinking of having an option to build something like a Gateway or something similar that connects to other Gateways that you have built, units can move into this "Gateway" and get teleported over to the next. If instant traveling is a bit too OP or unfair, then how about make it a big "Space elevator" sort of thing, where you move your units into it, and it will start "channeling" to the other Space elevator over a period of time. Once the countdown is over, they get teleported. I was also thinking that when your units are Channeling to another Space elevator and get attacked by an enemy unit, the teleport will be canceled and you gotta restart the Channeling. I know this may seem like a dumb idea but hey! We gotta step up every now and then.
Launch pad + orbiter = leave planet to moon. From there orbiters can travel freely between moons and asteroids. Gravity wells play a role so it takes more to leave a planet than a moon. Unit cannons will be able to launch units at the planet because of this, but not vice versa. For longer faster travel there will be teleporters. The most a game will span is a system, maybe a few system, the galaxy level play is a meta game over the real time game with sectors that are just in-game maps. That is about all we know about the Galactic War atm.
Why call the thread light speed and then not suggest light speed? the idea for gates are great but why not ships simply capable of light speed on their own (I would love, if this is implemented of course, for the stars to trace lines just like in star wars if you were to track the unit (obviously if you were traking the planet nothing in particular would happen. It's these kinds of attention to detail that can really finish you off)
You could build an inter-solar cannon to shoot the lander/commander to close to light speeds and have them arrive in a few years to a nearby system.
I always took the necromancer in diablo II, I like necromancy better on topic : either doors or ships that can travel at that speed, lets put it into the game.
Why are people talking about hand-wavey explanations about a gameplay mechanic that isn't going to exist? Pwny's post in this thread had nicely covered pretty much everything.
Magic is always faster than light speed. A lack of solid FTL goes a long way to explain the lore behind this war. How can you invade a system with a battle fleet, without any FTL? It would simply be too slow. A gated Commander can run laps around such a fleet, gathering more resources and ultimately being immune to the threat.
