It is explained in the change log that planets with an "experimental" tag have not yet been implemented as playable. They are only available on the planet editor.

Which is a shame, because I really wanted to play on the polkadot metal planets.

Originally, the polka-dot seemed to be a stand-in for water textures in some way. If you set the water height to max, then the entire globe would be smooth and dotted. Does the new version have a real water texture, or has it just been removed?

Hmmmm, he is right though. It doesn't work well for me either. Not planet editor that is. When I click for a preview it apparently finishes but I can't find the planet anywhere. Then I Ctrl-Alt-Delet and somehow that wakes the program up and it renders the planet. What in the world? Lol Pun

Not to mention it soaks a lot of processing power up.

When nothing shows up its because the planet creation isn't finished until it shows up. (They'll have to add a progress bar for it eventually.)

The generator uses various amount of ram and cpu during its generation, so you get phases where you think not much is happening (or its even finished) because its a light load phase. In reality its still building the planet. (Probably at the daisy-planting phase or so.)
