I do wonder how the ladder will work when the game is finished. If 1v1s will just be on one planet or if there will even be a ladder. Games across planets could take ages and i cant see that being used for competative play atm.. I mean are you not going to even see ur opponent untill 3 planets in? Is just gonna be a pure eco race till you meet? Enjoying the gentlemen's league though more people should join!!
It will be a different type of a competitive game. Plenty of people are competitive in this way and plenty of people are interested in this type of games. Problems is that nobody ever bothered to make a game of this type good enough for e-sports. Sure we might end up with a fluke but the gods are on our side, we shall be victorious.
I'm hoping there will be multiple ladders. A 1v1 ladder which starts basically how it is now, 2 people on 1 average sized planet. (but obviously you'll be able to go to other planets still). A team armies ladder, maybe 5v5?, where people can start on different planets. And an Alliances ladder, maybe same as team armies but no shared control (obviously). But then again they could just do a ladder for all the different kinds of options available. (Ladder for 2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2? )
Well it's all still up in the air, there is still a lot to figure out about the game, we're still missing a lot of features and such. The thing is that there is going to be all kinds of different ways to play PA, but they won't all be compatible with the CORE ladder play. Not that every ladder game will be the same mind you, but for the basic 1V1 type ladder things like maps will be constrained in certain ways, like there prolly wouldn't be 5+ planets, but there could be 1 planet with like 5 asteroids or something. Obviously trying to guess what it will be at this stage isn't likely to yield anything useful, we just don't know enough yet IMO. Mike
I'd assume that this is all just a question of the economical balance. How expensive is it to travel to the moon? If you need high t2 tech stuff to get off your planet it will be unpractical to play 1v1 on multiple planets, since it would indeed be a pure macro madness until you reach t2. But if you have cheap ways to expand (small one engie landers for example) on t1 it should be okay to play on a few celestial bodies. For example 2 planets with a moon per planet and one asteroid. Each planet would have a player on it. The players then could try to set up a base on the enemy planet's moon to shoot units down or they could try to go for the asteroid or they could go for a direct hidden base on the enemy planet, or many other things. What's pretty important is that the planets have less mass than they have currently. Resources need to be scarce so we have a reason to fight over them. Sure 1v1 on a 9 planet, 3 moon, 10 asteroid map would probably feel like playing a dozen setons clutch 1v1 in parallel. Not desirable.
I was kind of hoping for some input from the devs if they have put any thought into this topic yet. I think different ladders as suggested would be a nice way of doing it. Then people who wanted to do 1v1s could do so on smaller games and people who wanted to play for 4 hours and save the game in-between could do that on multiple worlds. I am not really talking about esports. Just ranked ladder. Although it would be nice.. I also noticed the grid on the space map when u zoom out is f***ing massive. Please tell me galactic war is not a multitude of these space grids lol.
Keep in mind, there are lots of sports that take hours to finish and are massively popular. Baseball, football, basketball, tennis... whos to say people wouldn't be interested to be a part of a massive battle that lasted 3 hours?
hard to say, 1v1s on single planets may work, but the random nature of planet generation isnt exactly fair, who knows though, that just may be a feature of the game since expanding is relatively easy, you may just be expected to expand to better locations, which still isn't quite fiar i think the question should be asked after the planet generator is finished
Well they have mentioned that the chronocam is partially meant to make casting easier..... And boy would I love to see a cast done well with the cam As for time scale theories: 1v1 would be designed around being quick and prolly on only a few planets. Something <= 1 hour. I think starcraft really sets the status quo on this. Especially when it comes to things like having a best of 3/5/7 tournament setup. Maybe i'm wrong and it might be considered playable to have 3 hour sudden death win/lose matches Other than that...... I certainly don't foresee esports taking on 20v20 team army 10 hour long games
I dont want to play a game that lasts 3 hours. 1 hour max for me i think. 30 mins is a nice length of time for a game (1v1). I dont really want to enduce a seizure. lol I would not mind playing and then saving and coming back but if there are lots of people playing you will never get them online together at the same time again. And if new people come in to pick up where others left off what is the point?
Most of my games from 1v1 to 2v2v2v2v2 have been 20-30 minutes. It has been the perfect time to get into a game yet not last too long. I hope it can stay close to this.
Well, I'd agree.....if it was a random generator. Luckily it's not, it's a Procedural Generator. Obviously a lot of factors are still rough around the edges and it's hard to compensate for all the elements of the game that aren't present yet. Mike
