Two questions, will there be a way to play Galactic Conquest with just one player and 30+ bot's (like on Sins of a Solar Empire?) Also, will there be a story line, and if so, will it tie in with Total Annihilation's story line? I tried looking for this information in the forums, but there is just too much info. on there...I honestly do not have time to look through all that...that, and this is not that critical, more curiosity than anything else.
Think of Galactic Conquest as an randomized galactic map that offers skirmish battles of increasing difficulty. I don't know how far the story aspect will go but don't expect to much here, that's not the main focus of this game. There is also not much known of how exactly the galactic map part of the game will work. I think it will be not much more as a pure map to select the next match. Not so a galaxy where you actually move some ships around or something. But we will have to wait some time to get more info here. Remember this is no 4X game here. Space battles refer to movements within solar systems, not galactic scale, mostly.
As the mega-corp loving Mr. purecaldari has pointed out; Galactic War is shaping up to be a metagame. Think of it like playing a game of Risk, where each turn you make happens to be a battle in a solar system. There's no reason at all why the can't be against a computer. And there's been hints that Uber has some kind of idea for a backstory. This is possibly just a handy wavey excuse to say the robots are fighting because of x, y, and z instead of just being brutally honest and saying the robots are fighting because it's awesome.
@BulletMagnet: Was it so obvious? Some kind of story will be there for sure. There must be something our beloved TA announcer has to voice over, and I don't think it will be "Double-Kill" ... "Godlike" (Mod-idea?)
Thank you, both of you, for you're help (sorry Caldari, Amarr all the way :) That does help. I realize the primary function of this game is for the skirmishes (just like in TA, yes, I did play that game, and loved it. Just very VERY sad that it will no longer run on my new comp. : While I will be playing some online, it's nice to know if I can just start a game vs. comps and play at my discretion, as I am slowly trying to ease up on my pc/video gaming.
I see, I'm in hostile territory here. The big question will how the balance of procedural campaign and actual story missions plays out. In TA you had two clear plots, with a narrative and a technological progression throughout the campaign. The mission path was fixed an led to a final battle. A classic campaign. I would guess that the story progression in PA will also be in somewhat fixed paths, as they are using voice overs. But the galactic map layout and composition of the solar systems will possibly by fully procedural. Story events could then be triggered by overtaking a set amount of systems or something. But thats only one possibility. Will be interesting to see how Uber will do this, because that will by a big part of the game for me, too. Online play is surely the focus of PA, but not so for me personally because I suck at this games. (but love them)
Hehe, well, I play more Dust 514 these days than EVE (just can't afford it anymore, not on college budget : So us "mercs" play with all sorts, from Caldari to Mimnitar, from Gallente to Amarr (our Dust Corp. has all sorts in it : And, apparently you had forgotten, but Amarr and Caldari are allies, as is Gallente and Mimnitar. : The storyline will be nice to play once (I always play the storyline at least once in every game I play) but as I said, I will mostly be buying this for Planetary Conquest. Like I did for Sins, I will likely play one "PC" game over the course of like, a month. : (and if this game goes very well, it will likely replace StarCraft II for me. I love StarCraft, but Blizz just comes out with way too many expansions (that cost money) too fast...(I really hope UBER does not make that "mistake") I hope PA is not "replaced" by an expansion for the next several years. Instead, I hope they just add lots of "patches" for free as the game progresses, not just bug fixes, but extra stuff to, to add to the game experience. But we shall see. I paid for the Beta, so I can't wait for September :
