Would be cool, if you could make a special "sensor"-option, so that you can launch satellites into the atmosphere, which can to some recon and even attack with missiles or lasers (a bit like in SupCom -> the satellite base thing).
    Best regards

You can see satellites on the graybox image. Maybe those are recon satellites.

Yes, there are plans for satellites of several types.

According to the game files there's "radar_satellite" and "radar_satellite_adv". Are we to assume there'll be more than just those two then?

Yeah, we simply haven't explored orbital enough to know all the ones we want to have so we started with obvious stuff. Orbital weapons platform, recon, lander etc.

    Lander sounds like fun!

Also thought that just said 'Orbital platform' there, artificial satellites could be interesting. *Looks at modders*

Wonder if there will be any upkeep for satellites. Like if you do not have enough energy they fall out of the sky one by one :p.

More likely it'll be like radar and they simply don't report blips if they're unpowered. Also, that's not how satellites work.

Actually, most satellite orbits will eventually decay when they run out of reaction mass for stationkeeping. It can take hundreds or thousands of years though.

depending on altitude and size and mass, the range is days to longer than the life of the universe (though with those they're far enough out that something else might grab you).

Well yeah, but no one in their right mind will play that long.

Ah, who am I kidding. They had to include a 22 hour limit on game sessions.

Most satellites these days have an operating time of around 10 - 20 years, after which they shut off and have a degrading orbit of anywhere from one year to like you said, thousands of years depending on many factors.
