From what I read, the pricing is set so because on Kickstarter, the $90 backer spot contained the Alpha access. The developers did not want to screw over their Alpha backers by setting the price lower.

Imagine if you spent $90 to access the game and test it earlier than anyone else. Then some months later, they set the Alpha price at, say, $40 or $50. That wouldn't make you very happy...would it?

Personally, I wouldn't have been off-put; I supported the project at the level I did because I wanted the game made, and wanted it to be made as well as it possibly could: alpha and beta access were simply perks. Others no doubt would have taken it differently, perhaps even the majority of others, so I see the wisdom behind the decision.

(It's heartening that there can be a reasonable discussion about this... by my clock the trolls had come and gone within 72 hours? Seeing as they'd be the same people that wouldn't have grasped the concept of an alpha to begin with, I'd say they were little loss: the community had to deal with them at some point, and at least this way they weren't able to worm their way into the backer's forum).

As far as i'm concerned, i would not feel angry if PA Alpha early accessed was offered at a lower price than what i've paid for during kickstarter.

Basically anything that could help Uber to get more money to make this game as polished as possible so that PA gets million seller (anyone can dream ;) ), that would be OK.

[I participated to this kickstarter because TA/Supcom/PA are exactly about what i like in RTS : Massive battles, huge scale and strategic zoom ... Yes i know, no such stuff in TA.
Now to be honest if Uber had not been behind the scene i would not have participated. Only a very very skilled team can achieve this. As soon as i knew Jon Mavor and his mates were doing this stuff, it was obvious i had to be part of this]

Now, I also think that 90$ ensures that people who are ok to pay this amount of money are not going to come here and start to complain about the very first bug/issue they have in Alpha.

Yeah it seems to me a lot of people don't know what alpha or beta means.

Yeah. And even if every single backer was OK with the alpha price on steam being less than $90 that isn't the only reason that its $90.

The only thing I'd suggest adding is the reasoning for the pricing on steam for the pre access, call it the kick starter pre access pack or something. Might give more info

The reason I supported PA, was because I wanted the game to get made. The reason I uped my contribution was because I believed in them and wanted the game to go further. People need to understand that games like PA aren't that common, and sometimes because of publishers etc we don't get the game we actually want. Uber has given us the chance to get exactly the game we want and to help make it in the process. That is why in my opinion it should be and is more expensive. Its like a custom built game for the backers / contributors. Once the game is done and is complete then they can sell it for a normal game price. Until that has happened I want them to charge what they need to get the game done well and have it scale up not down in features and coolness.

Uber is doing something ground breaking in the way they are developing this game, not just the tech they are using, but the way they are interacting with us as gamers.

I would rather pay higher prices and get better games that are what I want than pay normal to cheap prices for half baked games that have some but never all of what I want.

So, my answer to the question of "Why should I pay $90 for PA?" is, ultimately, "Because you want to." Just because the Kickstarter is over doesn't mean Uber has turned a profit. This production is costing them a BUTT-TON more than 2.5 million, that much I guarantee.

And it's a niche game! This isn't like Call of Duty where Uber can just publish another $15 DLC after their employees run out of food stamps and have millions of screaming fanboys thank them for their irrefutable contribution to human society. This isn't TF2 where Uber can just push out another crate full of hats to the (poor and Irish) hatless masses and get a few hundred thousand in virtual dollars in return.

This is a good, old-fashioned game, designed by the developers. It is not designed to appeal to the majority, it is not a compromise, it is not to make you feel that rush of adrenaline as you get another noscope corner headshot with your 1337 dragshot skills. It is a game that you enjoy by thinking, and not a lot of people want that.

You're paying $90 because that is the price of a AAA game that most people don't have the mindset to enjoy.

Just some food for thought - a blog from Kickstarter talking about how they do not want people thinking of kickstarter as a store.

    http://www.kickstarter.com/blog/kicksta ... ot-a-store

I think if the KS backers would stop thinking of it as a store (as the KS creators intended) then this could have gone on Steam for a more "normal" price without this whole issue. IMO, worrying about what you get back for your donation and taking offense if other people PURCHASE the same for less later is the wrong way of thinking about Kickstarter funding and is what caused this whole mess. I worry that the same people who wanted to see Uber succeed the most may ultimately be hurting them more than helping.

Lowering the price would've hurt Uber more than not doing so.

Well, not really. Lowering the price to say, $70 $75 or $80 wouldn't have been a bad move. They already have all of the Kickstarter backers on their side, all of which have already purchased the game and already know whether or not they're going to like it. And those that like it and have stuck around for it are generally predisposed towards liking Uber.

And if they did that they wouldn't have nearly as big of a PR mess on their hands.

Why? Because the KS backers would have been upset? Exactly my point...

    No.

On one hand, way too many people would go on the servers, making the game unplayable (literally).

On the other hand, even with this 'high' price, they sold a lot, and thus got a lot of money. I do not think 'low price + more players' > 'high price + less players'.

Besides, with such a 'high' price, most people are actually testing and helping Uber out. Had the price been lower, more people would buy to play, and not to experience alpha testing, cluttering the forum with more useless and redundant threads.

    The point is that Uber isn't in this to make a profit, if they were they would have said stuff like;

"Screw the KS backers, we already have their money, 15$ Alpha access!"

"There will be a lot of testers, but lets under-rent the servers to maximize profits, we can claim alpha testing and get away with any issues"

"Lets charge for new commanders and units!"

So on and So forth, these may sound cartoonishly evil, but it's not nearly as outlandish as it sounds. Uber is out to make a great game, and to do that, the more people TESTING during Alpha the better, and the pricing helps in that regard.

I've seen some of the comments on Steam from the "testers". You cannot convince me that a pay wall gets you better quality testers. You might argue that it keeps all but the biggest fans out. I'd argue that people who pay that much to test have questionable judgement. However, it seems clear that we are never going to see eye to eye on this, so I'll leave it be and just vote with my wallet by never purchasing this (or any other Uber game for that matter).
