What about experimental structures that are mutually exclusive like Wonders in Age of Empires? Either way, it sounds like mod territory to me.

Maybe the artifacts could be tied into the "back-story" or lore of PA.

Sure this is essentially what the metal planets will be, old artifacts from the past. I think all of this should be possible. This would be like crates in C&C this never really unbalanced the game.

All the technology in the game had to be developed somewhere right?. In PA lore at some point there was at least a few planets scattered about that showed some developed industry & civilian infrastructure and could add a unique capture-able building to add a small boost to economy or tech.

It would just need to be a rare find when the solar map is generated. I honestly think this makes more sense than a entire planets made of metal. Not that i am saying the devs idea is bad, far from it but i do think their is room to expand on planet types.

The towns/colonies even if no tech structure existed would just help to make the PA world feel lived in and a sense that the player is fighting for something for someone and not just the hell of it.

I agree at some point when supported this can all be modded into the game no doubt. But its still early days for this game and surely the devs will be adding more and more content to the game they wont just release it and stop adding to the game. This could even be just a different game mode or a feature that can be disabled during match setup.

This oil derrick did not ensure victory in a game, but it did give players something to fight over  .

And they only fought over it because it gave them resources. Resources which have the sole purpose of being used to achieve that victory.

Yes this is true, very true. Its a point of conflict between players in a game built on encouraging conflict between players that is the point of the game. We are striving for domination of a solar system here, planet by planet. This just makes it worth it to explore each planet in search a possible bonus.

I really do not think this would break the game in anyway. Its expanding on the current formula. Its not changing what makes the game special as we see it now.

Each side is trying to achieve victory but this does not equal auto-win on any level. These are small boosts to income or a tech unlock that is balanced with the rest of the game.

Mutant barracks for example. New unit unlocked but it can in no way win the game outright for you.

noaveragejoe, Metal Spots already achieve what you want, by having them spread out across the planet you encourage spreading out and putting multiple spots withing close proximity to create valuable areas.

Assuming we nerf converters hard enough, or don't have them.

Forged Alliance is a prime example of that already.
