When I play TA or SupCom with friends cooperativily if space is tight or we are building a combined base in an area there is no warning you are about to build on top of someone else build queue. all friendly players being able to see build shadows (not best term) would be very useful.
you guys do realise that you will be playing in a system of multiple planets, and that each planet can be potentially enormous right? just how close are you guys expecting to be building things to your allies? I personally think time would be far better spent on more useful things other than something that is caused by your lack of attention to your base or surroundings.
Just because the game allows for enormous maps doesn't mean that only those are played. It additionally doesn't mean that allied players won't build a base together. It especially doesn't mean its an useless feature, as uber has alluded sometimes to make it possible for multiple players to play a single faction (ie. shared control over the same units).
i'd imagine the utility would more be for managing bases, e.g. my friend is distracted with a battle and doesn't anticipate the air threat so i build AA with his engineer at his base. this in turn messes up a factory he had queued up. what OP suggested would address this with probably minimal effort, just display building ghosts to anyone you share control with
Well, if the commander is as good as the FA ACU then I'm sure there will be many instances of throwing up firebases with your friends commanders to get good firepower and buildpower quickly concentrated. Would be nice to have their build queue show up as a 'ghost' tinted their team color.
I completely second this idea - also gives you a hunch what your ally (a potential stranger) is doing if he doesn't/cannot communicate.
What is wrong with you? The OP is specifically asking for a mechanic that would allow him to be able to have something to pay attention to in his base or surroundings! How the heck would a player not pay attention to something that is not there? The OP's request is absolutely valid and even makes more sense with the server/client setup in PA. On a peer-to-peer system, that may have been more communication and extra load on each ally/coop player's system. In the current model, the server is handling the load of simulation so something like this may not have the same cost to the client machines. A supplemental suggestion I have is that a setting may be desirable to allow the ghosted images to only be visible if you are currently building something. This goes for your own ghosted build items, but I would like the ability to selectively switch either or both on and off via hotkeys or options during the game.
Great idea, OP! Happens every now and then in SupCom, that your ally has units idling on where you planned to build something which stops your whole build queue progress.
An appreciable idea, OP. When my allies and I build our megabases, we should definitely have mechanics to avoid stepping on each other's toes
Idea: Make building previews change color (say from green (as in SupCom) to orange) if it's one of your allies' and YOU are blocking it. Not if somebody else is blocking it. Then it only changes color to him.
