Can you mine under your opponents base and plant a bomb or stage a sneak attack, maybe even underground bases?

This has come up before, basic consensus is that its overall really awkward, and pretty vestigial when we have an orbital layer and multiple planets, moons and asteroids.

Searching the Forums should bring them up pretty easily. Also Check out Threads like the Topic Index and Confirmed Features List 2.0 to help get up to speed.

Would add a lot extra management. There is already enough you will need to worry about. (But I'm sure you could mod it if you really wanted...)

I honestly didn't mind SC2's approach at times.
For example the Terran Supply Depots, they make for effective walls as well as making it easy to maneuver troops over your own defenses, same with Perdition Turrets.

That kind of thing is worlds apart from what the OP is suggesting, what the OP is hoping for is more akin to The Underground Layer in Metal Fatigue.

Land/Sea minefields would be neat, although that would require analogous mine sweeping units.

Maybe uber thinks about it for an expansion.

It's just awkward. I can imagine bridges being interesting, but actual underground just won't feel or look right in this. And like knight said, we've already got a planetary layer. I think that will be enough to contend with :)
