I had a thought in regards to Asteroid usage - could they be used to orbit planets and bombard them from above or to defend against incoming troop transports? The idea is that you'd install engines on the asteroid and move them into orbit around enemy or friendly planets instead of crashing into them. You could then build regular artillery and anti-air structures on the asteroids surface and voila! You now have a DIY Battleship, ready to intercept enemy invasions at home or too take the fight to their skies. An extension of this idea would be too use asteroids as gigantic troop transports, large armies could be loaded onto them and then flown across to the enemy. The asteroid would provide them with cover during landing and then air support afterwards - if there's still room on the asteroid you could even build a few factories to top up your troop numbers until you have a decent footing on the planet below. This idea should fit with the already planned mechanics (assuming the option to orbit planets is available) and would make asteroids even more useful. Let me know what you think!
Well Mavor has already talked about that kind of usage in interviews and such, so it's already in consideration. Mike
For defense it sounds like a great idea. For offense I'm not sure what you could possibly build on the asteroid that would be more powerful than just smashing it into his base.
There's no reason why this couldn't be something you could do with the already planned features. As long as the simulation is pretty realistic then you should be able to do whatever makes sense.
Yes, that was what I was hoping! The only foreseeable issue is wether or not Uber include the option to "Orbit" a planet instead of crashing into it. Once in position the asteroid would be manoeuvred in the same way as any orbital unit.
