Would work, would be a nice "plot-twist" while playing a game if suddenly a ordinary planet turns out to be a big weapon... :D

If metal biome were to behave like the TA metal maps, this would be awesome for a multiple vs 1 match. One giant with unlimited resources and multiple small players working together with very limited resources.
Although this would also be possible by letting one player start on a metal planet and the rest on another one. And then the team of players would need to be fast aswell to not be horrobly annihalated by the superweapon on the metal planet.

Yes, just create a planet archetype spec with appropriate weights for metal/tropical.

Will the planet generator be able to make a metal planet that looks suitably artificial, though? If it's tuned to make planets that look believably "natural"... but then I suppose the hard part of that is just to stop them looking artificial, so intentionally making it look artificial is easier. Lots of symmetry, hard lines and deep chasms bridged by machinery, I guess. Either way I'm super hyped for the day when I see "Backers Only: Metal Planet concept"

Will the weapon ability of the metal planet remain, you said it could be there.

I don't see why it couldn't still be there. It might be less powerful though since there is less infrastructure behind it.

Or reversed - a planet is hollowed out and had a metal interior placed into it.

Something about mixed metal planets is what the planet is underneath. when mining you dig down a bit so although there might be 200 meters of surface earth, underneathe that its all metal. o is it just this one spot of ancient giant ship that embedded itself here?

As for the weapons. they are probably just buildings that spawn on metal planets rather than an intrinsicnpart of the texture.

Depends on the implementation really, both are viable except that the idea of it being buried deep in teh planets crust is kinda pointless almost, to make it makes more sense to view a Metal Biome/_____ Biome Mix to be more akin to a giant city or industrial complex having been built as opposed to it being the planet itself per-say. So maybe a Planet was once just one giant city(Think Coruscant from starwars) and over the centuries the planet has slowly started to reclaim the city and replace it with forests, still leaving patches of the 'city' strewn about among the Forest.

Source? Part of the idea was that the Metal planet itself was the weapon, not that it had weapons built on it, Basically more Death Star than Normandy(The Beach).

But the end, it's still way open in terms of how it'll be implemented, because we're dealing with a game, the implementation chosen will be which ever works best for the intended Gameplay in the end.

Probably is the keyword in that sentance.

I cant really see it working differently to there being x indestructible buildings you need to capture and repair. those buildings shape is up to the imagination of course such as light filled canyon or giant weapons port.

This was how I remember they proposed the metal planets during the Kickstarter. In my eyes, the metal "planets" wouldn't really be starting planets, but planets in orbit in a system that you could exploit later in the game, much like asteroids.
