I am new here but i have been watching these forums and have seen nothing of the subject appear. since there will be the galactic war, skirmishes and such, why not make special commanders like achievements you unlock when you finish an entire galactic war campaign, or a certain amount of planets skirmish match. They said there will be many commanders so I thought that might give players som extra drive to finish the galactic war and show them like achievements in multiplayer battles.

    Thoughts/Opinions?

Most achievements are not "achievements" at all.

I wouldn't mind that, it beats the usual "Achievement unlocked!: kill 50 of the enemies units- 50 EXP!!!" It'd actually make something that'd be worth gaining

Simply put, I think it would make the majority of TA/Supcom vets in the community rage like no tomorrow.

It _might_ work with something purely cosmetic, but it's a touchy subject.

An issue with unlockable content is that it can alienate new players. Even if the unlocked content isn't ostensibly more powerful units, new players will see vets playing around with all these fun new toys that they themselves don't get to look at until they have played 50 games or annihilated their first planet, or whatever.

I'm not personally a fan of that, and it would need to be handled very carefully without making the game less welcoming to new players. And if you don't have a decent stream of new players, you run the risk of a stagnant community and loss of interest. I don't know if unlockable content would initiate that by itself, but it could contribute.

I did not mean for the commander unlocks to be completely overpowered or anything, i mean like just a custom model or skin or something that shows the biggest match you have played or something hard to achieve you have done.

I personally dont like achievements/trophies either but if they actually give you something then i think they might be worth it

It isn't so much about being over powered as just giving tools that vets can play with that newbs can't. 0K did this in that you could only unlock new structures and commander upgrades after having played a certain number of games. Although these upgrades weren't over-powered, and balanced well with the game as a whole, it still alienated some of the players who had less strategic options as a result. For example, you don't need the strategic artillery to win a game, and it might not even come up in many of the games you play, but a player can still feel a bit cheated if it only gets unlocked for vets. It gives the impression that the game is only really for the hardcore competitive types, who get to play with all the cool toys, while everyone else doesn't get to see if they are any use at all, un-less they are being aimed at them.

I understand that you probably arn't suggesting this, particularly if you just want something more subtle. However, if it's only cosmetic, then there is another issue. Creating new art assets can be a time-consuming and expensive experience. Given that Uber needs to maximise the amount of game depth on a fairly small amount of budget, it might not be worth their time. Obviously, that's their decision.

One thing that i have briefly mentioned in a past thread would be for commanders to have medals displayed upon them, which could be linked to an achievement system. I personally, would find it mildly amusing that these merciless engines of destruction felt the need to decorate themselves like their former progenitors. That is something that might be simpler to do, and still add a flavour of what you are trying to suggest.

    HATS! Commander hats! :D

But honestly, I'm all for commander customization as long as it's purely aesthetic. Nothing against someone wanting his ACU to look more personal, more to his taste. Just don't ask for upgrades that changes the way it works and its power/habilities. Please. :D

Yes they are just cosmetic, no stat boosts or anything. It would just be a reward for doing something. Like if you finish a galactic war game after so long, and what will the reward be? a big "you have conquered the galaxy" with a cool picture? well that would be nice, but I just thought it would be cool to be able to show others you have done that

Sounds innocent enough. I'm certainly NOT thinking of a gaudy golden crown which your commander would wear, or anything like that... Too flashy. >_>

Suspiciously specific denial aside, it'd be very difficult to come up with something that EVERYONE is okay with.

Well if they find they dont like it, they don't have to use it if they don't want to.

    No.

Playing the game should be its own reward. Stop wanting to lead players on with sh!tty unlocks.

As long as every commander is balanced, I don't give a ****.

I don't even, *gasp* care if it's paid DLC!
