    Here's a fun article:
    http://www.damninteresting.com/the-thir ... perweapon/

The idea of an orbital death ray isn't anything new, but this option is pretty interesting. The theory is that mirrors are fairly light and cheap, so minimal effort is needed to put a large mirror in orbit. The big advantage is that firing the weapon is FREE. All the necessary energy is given from the sun, which is beamed harmfully down to the surface. Only a little effort is needed to direct the weapon to its target.

Do you have other ideas for orbital death? Let them out!

Are you saying this is the same thing like when we are playing god and burn ants using a magnifying glass?

That article is way too long for my brain but I will give it a go if the brain gets some more motivation

    So like this?

In that case I would absolutely love to see this in-game! Would be a great compliment to the KEW. :D

    honestly it sound balanced enough
i mean its just a giant peace of glass with some engines on it so its really easy to take down (asteroids, missiles)

+1 for the giant death laser.

It sounds like a quite cool feature! Tho I think it should only be "fire-able" during a special time since it need the light of the sun and stars to make it a bit more realistic so that it doesn't fire with super range and super power like a crazy f**k. Or we could make it store energy from the sun and then it can fire it almost any time it wants and the more you wait the more powerfull it gets. But that might be like an upgrade to the first weapon. So at lvl 1 it can only redirect and at level 2 it can store energy and light. Or is that ruining the whole consept of the building? Might be so.

In FA there is an experimental satellite death beam thing for UEF. I'm assuming you have played it and know how it works, but something like that, but a bit more UBER would be very cool. With the terrain deforming and melting under the heat of the beam, could make for an epic cinematic.

Not just for weapon, we may able to use it for efficient energy production.

"Orbital laser" has literally been done so many times it's cliche. Why not have orbital platforms do something else, like let them build and using drop pods for surgical tank drops behind enemy lines, or engineer drops.

I beg to differ, especially since this isn't so much as laser as a giant magnifying glass. Which I have only ever seen in Die Another Day.

Um, has nobody here even *read* John Ringo's 'Troy Rising' series that happen to be one of the inspirations for this game? lol.

The entire point of the books is that Earth makes a huge array of mirror satellites, all of which direct sunlight at a massive battlestation which then focuses the power into a huge laser....

    Die Another Day
    Under Siege 2
    Command and Conquer
    Every bloody CNC game
    WZ2100
    SupCom: FA
The Troy Rising franchise (three books there, though I've read none of them)
    Unreal Tournament (all of them)

Big beams of death have been done before.

    0/10 Not awesome.

[PS:] That's only the ones I've thought of in my pre-coffee morning haze. There's others, I'm sure.

Well bullets, shells and missiles have been done to death as well, so I don't get the point of that discussion.

    Final Fantasy: Spirits Within.
    Akira
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
    Bubblegum Crisis
Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 has the Solar System weapon, thought it was never used against a planet

EDIT: Also the opening sequence to Vanquish has a similar weapon type, tho I think it's intended purpose was just energy transmission?

Yeah there are plenty out there.

This is true, but they don't receive the fan-fare that goes with EHMAHGERD URBITAHL DERTH LAZER.

FunkOff claimed the laser was cliche, and challenged Bobucles to do something novel like a satellite factory.

If you want to do something novel for mainline combat instead of bullets and shells,

    • by all means; make a suggestion.

There is a massive difference between "death laser in space" and "magnifcation of sunlight from space". One is a beam, another is a triangle.

The Novax satellite was a plasma/laser/death ray, not a reflection of the sun.

So in my relatively limited experience with RTS's outside of TA and SupCom, I tend to think that an orbiting magnifying glass is pretty original.
