Well I needed the workstation aspect as well, my philosophy is that for a laptop to be worth it I need to be able to do everything I can with my desktop, maybe not as large or quite as fast thought.

Click the link above. That's a laptop I recommend. It would run PA just fine. It's a little pricey but it's got the necessary specs and power, while being worth the price. Check it out if you want. It would also run modern games pretty well.

Noooooooooo. For $950 he could go build a custom tower, one that could blow that laptop away. OP, at least IMHO, stay away from trying to game on laptops. Desktops are so much more powerful and easier to upgrade.

+1 to building your own rig. You would be amazed how little a world-class, state of the art gaming desktop costs.

Do your research to get the best deals on the right parts for your price range. Get some people who already know what they're doing to double-check your part list for you to ensure compatibility. I think reddit's /r/buildapc is the best place to do this- post your list and you'll get suggestions for how to get more for less money, and they'll make absolutely sure those parts actually go together.

Then, you just need to be able to follow instructions. Building a computer is rather like building Ikea furniture. The parts have gotten so modular, and so high quality, and so easy to assemble, that there is no reason to pay $6,000 for an Alienware rig when you can build it yourself for $1,000.

Still, if you aren't up for paying $1k for a state of the art rig, you can build one that will run anything for the next 3-5 years for maybe $600.

Yea I know, but since he has a laptop and showed us another laptop, I assumed that's mainly what he needs since he seems to be someone that moves around often. It's well known that desktops are cheaper especially if you buy the parts separately and build it.

Many people aren't comfortable building their own computer, or prefer the laptop form factor over all other considerations. Nothing wrong with that.

But yes, if you pick the parts right for just over $300 you can build a desktop PC that's about on par gaming performance wise with our base developer workstation at Uber.

You're right about that. Not everyone wants to put the effort to building one especially someone not very knowledgeable on hardware since they are probably busy with other stuff in life. Gaming laptops are usually known for being more expensive but that's alright. I currently use an Asus gaming laptop that cost me $1200 and it's very damn good and worth the price with it's specs.
I know a desktop is cheaper and I used to build my own desktops but I move around too much so might as well spend a little extra on something I can move around while I can play the latest games on as well.

    Estimated Release is summer 2013, and the closer we get the more accurate the estimate will be(to a point) so you still have 3-4 months or so to save, so as I said earlier, if you don't need it immediately, just wait;

    - You'll be able to save and have a bigger budget
    - Use your current budget but get more 'bang for your buck' later
    - Aim for certain specs that are availabe today and potentially pay less later.

There really is no downside to waiting.

I linked a good laptop, if you dont have the cash atm then just save up. They might have a similar model at the same price with better specs in the near future so perhaps waiting until the specs release of PA may be wise but keep my recommendation in mind in case. Asus laptops are some of the best. They have excellent cooling systems that most laptops fail to have. My favorite brand.

I agree with ultramarine, Asus is the way to go. A bunch of the parts in my rig are made by then.

As much as I love Asus, the Lenovo's Thinkpads have always been a staple for me when it comes to laptops. At work, the T-series is standard. The only downside is their recent changes to the keyboard, and some other aesthetics, but for the most part, they're excellent.

Hey, Do you really need a laptop or can you go with a desktop?

Like others have said you can build your own computer for 600 USD or around that. A desktop will also last you allot longer.

If you do not know how to build a computer I know that Newegg has some free Videos on building a PC.

headclot - Already discussed, the OP wants a laptop.

Lenovo were pretty much the standard for PC laptop build quality. They also tend to be more a bit more expensive and often have slower graphics hardware than their competitors. Asus on the other hand has some of the best price to performance ratios of the major brands, though you can often find a MSI, Clevo (sold as Sager, Malibal, and others) or unbranded Compal laptop for even cheaper. You also kind of get what you pay for in terms of build quality (though Asus has a decent reputation).

No problem. I'm here to help when it comes to hardware especially gaming laptops since that's what I get as well due to needed mobility.
