Would it be possible to see a short video of the team at work? Maybe a little coding / idea generation? I'm currently working on an undergrad engineering design project. I'm interested in seeing how you guys get things done. I've only seen a few team workplaces, and each one has been radically different. I suppose this is something we'll see in the making-of movie though.
I'm sure we'll see clips of the design meetings in the documentary, but coding? Who really wants to watch that? Here, I'll give you a preview:
Yeah, watching a coder isn't much more interesting than watching a secretary type out a word doc. It looks about the same, except the code editor has more buttons and the text on screen makes no sense to a non-programmer.
There's actually a video of Howard's sound workplace in the livestream. Is that the kind of thing you were looking for? That might be something they could work into more of the streams perhaps. I certainly found it interesting to see his setup.
and.... it's gone. He just moved offices. We are putting a lot of the stuff you are looking for into the documentary. Lots of scenes hunched around computer screens looking at blinking lights. I have actually considered the idea of doing a coding live stream of my desktop but I'm having a hard time with the concept of everyone being able to see the code.
Yes I can definitely see some potential issues with that, so I understand your hesitation. For what it is worth though, I think it would be a really interesting peek into the kind of thought processes that happen during the actual "leg work," so to speak. Maybe focus the stream on a part of the code that isn't necessarily as proprietary to PA and Uber; it would still be interesting to see, I believe.
I toyed with the idea of live streaming from home, but showing the code along with running the WIP test stuff would be an issue. Maybe when we get the alpha going I can do some me vs the AI live streams.
You versus the AI? What torture... I want to play against the AI, I would not be able to stand just watching you... lol
Why would it be hard for you? Even if people understand the code you (maybe) show us,the chance that it gets copied is very low I think.(You have to download the stream video.pause and start to slowly copie the lines of code. Its unlikely that someone copy this code for 100% because there are gaps in the code.) Do it like Notch.Stream while you are coding but make some gaps in the code to disable some things if you have to test anything or just put Scathis awesome head.gif on the stream so nobody can watch it.
Notch's stream resulted in people doing just that and actually recreating a working version of what he was working on.
There's just no getting around the fact that you'll have to wear pants. It's enough to make any programmer uncomfortable.
If someone makes a papercraft of the Delta Commander (if they haven't already) then he could do a tour in photos. I wouldn't livestream coding. A time lapse would go better. Perhaps set to one of Howard's music samples.
