I have now been using Windows 8 for about three months (since release preview) and I have liked it. Windows 8 plays all desktop games/softwares smoothly and I have nothing to complain about W8. And now I just checked the prjocet again and a question came to my mind: "Will the Planetary Annihilation be in the Windows 8's store or support W8", because I haven't found any info about Windows 8 support. I have only found a confirmation about Linux support.
It will support Windows 8. Also, you could put Windows 8 into compatability mode for an older Windows version. Besides that, it is a good thing you openly brought this up, because Uber will have a chance, while it is still possible and easy, to get this game some Windows store integration.
Isn't DX11 required for W8 store? Knowing MS, I guess they will never allow cross-platform products not based on their technology into the store.
I don't see why PA couldn't be for the W8 store as a branch. You know, it will also be on steam probably, for standalone, probably for all those sites that adopted SMNC like Kongregate, and stuff. It could be used with W8 store, without requiring it. If microsoft doesn't allow it, devs should copy-paste their letter of denial on the forums, and at least we will have everlasting linked evidence saved of us trying that route, so if anyone asks, thats why we didnt.
We don't own the windows store but I don't see why we wouldn't try to list it. I have little to no experience with the windows8 store myself though and it's possible they could make it difficult enough that it's not worth it (e.g. if it takes more than a couple of hours to release an update).
They say that while windows store is not yet in full capacity it's rather easy to get signed in. So PA have it's chance to slip in until MS started the "fortification" process.
I spent some time reading up on this and it seems like a no brainer. My understanding is that for desktop apps you can't see in the store anyway, you can basically just link to your own website where you sell it. Only real "winrt" apps actually get delivered by the store. At least this is what my research so far has revealed. If anyone else has more detail feel free to correct.
You can sell 64-bit/32-bit games/apps at Windows Store that are as powerfull as desktop apps. These apps can't be runned on devices that use ARM processor like tablets. I don't know how difficult it is to make the desktop app and Windows Store app at the same time, but I think that they have now good opportunity to get this to the Store if they just want.
Unless Uber makes PA into a metro App there is no reason to get it on the store. Considering they are releasing on multiple platforms it would seem pretty easy to release in a metro app form but the real question I have personally is... why? Metro really gives you no new functionality to the app. Just running it on the desktop would be infinitely easier it would seem. no need to port for another platform and you can update through the game's servers already so there's no need to go through microsoft to do that. I don't mean to try and shoot down your idea I just wonder what you would actually get out of having it on the store instead of just running it on the desktop since this kind of game will not work on a tablet anyways.
It definitely won't be a metro app unless porting to metro gets a lot simpler. I don't want to maintain more than one port to the same platform (windows). I've been doing most of my personal coding on mac btw. We also force our coders to run at least 2 platforms.
