i think that asteroid "destroying" the planet is a bit much but they could severely raise the temperature or deform it. Or it could seperate into smaller usable bits.

my problem with asteroids is it seems like they are unstoppable. it would be like it sucks to be you right now incoming unstoppable missile thats why i think they should be stoppable or not do a bunch of irreversible damage.

that is my beef with trailer so far

Well there is speculation of sending troops to the asteroid in route to stop or detonate it.

And in the trailer nuclear weapons seemed effective in damaging the 'roid, but it was too late to prevent the chunks from hitting the surface.

But I am sure Uber have plans for it that we don't know.

(It is also speculation that they don't destroy planets, but rather screw the surface into bubbling lava to prevent use)

You know what you're right, Uber has been planning to make the game balanced all along!!!!!!111!!!one!![/sarcasm]

There are so many options for balance but but can't figure out the right one(s) until we can....you know, play the actual game.

well i could see that. i was thinking it but i wanted to focus on the actual asteroid, like what would it do, is it easy to destroy, etc.

because i agree with you but what if the asteroid hits? do you lost the entire planet? i think it will be severely hindered for a while since everything has to settle down.

    but yeah

Its more likely it will only devastate half a world, but it may be dependent on size.

And considering from what I have read about the Dev's plans for the game, I think they are intending to have battles destroy the usability of systems, leading battles to end with players fighting over whats left.

But It could go either way, so as Orange said

i think i would hate no use ever on a planet. but if it had planet fixers or a time before it is normal-ish then totally. i would hope that you could detach parts of the planet, like turn a mountain into a asteroid

This thread falls under my "Everyone will assume the worst most imbalanced implementation of something possible" theory. ;)

well it looks like in the trailer that the asteroid is freaking fast. also knowing them they wont have terrible unbalanced things so i bet you could shields of sorts that can shield the planet

You do realize the "Trailer" isn't actual gameplay right? That's why it was labeled 'Gameplay Visualization' right at the beginning.

I have an argument to invalidate the OP's theory once and for all:
As far as we know building the 'planet cracker' might take up the entire resources of a large planet. Now what?

I'm gonna lock this because it is way too early to discuss the balance of specific units that are not even implemented yet. ;)

Hope you guys have fun on the forum anyway!
