Supcom 2, you were born with a shotgun pointed at Chris Taylor's head by the publishers,
They made him hurt you, it's not your fault, it's not his fault,
You were a child of creativity, born into a proud family with a great tradition,
I know you had great aspirations many watched you be born with anticipation,
and there are many great ideas within you and a lot of love given to you,
and those who made you, tried their best to make you fulfill their dreams and for you to have a destiny.
But you were scarred from birth and its time for you to die.
Your fans have lost the concept of freedom, like beggars they push the shortcut key to active their mass makers.
Your fans have lost their spark for wonder, the excitement of the unknown, they want a tech tree, like freeway lined with barbwire instead of an endless jungle with unknown paths and creatures.
Your fans have lost their ability to look back, because research cannot be destroyed.
Your fans never loved, because you can not love without the concept of build capacity
Your fans were robbed, because there are empty shelves in our home where units used to be
Your fans died twice, suffocated on miniature maps as their strategic minds were lobotomized by the ability to supply AA to their squads without actually knowing where they are, like a child playing with his toys you replace the real battle with the tech tree upgrades.
Your fans do not understand money, you can sell them fake replicas of giant robots for pennies and they will believe they got the real thing.
You are like windows vista after windows xp (PA will be windows 7 hopefully, and mac users haven't heard of RTS like they haven't heard of notepad)
Your fans were duped, holding a shoe with a fake nike sign scribbled in white marker, the last fools in a pyramid scheme, they are driving a hummer H2, thinking that Hollywood is the pinnacle of cinema and that rock'n'roll hasn't died, they are democrats and they are republicans, they are the children who curse their parents. You are a child betrayed.
You got the shortest straw, you and your fans.
You are the bastard child of the TA/Supcom family, who whenever guests come to visit our home, starts jumping around making a fool of everyone. You are giving our great family a bad name with your antics.
What was done to you was wrong, don't think of it otherwise and don't think it should be done to the newest member of the family.

And for Supcom FA I will reference Reinaldo Arenas

"I am that child with the round, dirty face
who on every corner bothers you with his
    "can you spare a quarter?"
I am that child with the dirty face
    no doubt unwanted
that from far away contemplates coaches
    where other children
emit laughter and jump up and down considerably

    I am that unlikeable child
    definitely unwanted
    with the round dirty face
who before the giant street lights or
    under the grandames also illuminated
or in front of the little girls that seem to levitate
projects the insult of his dirty face

I am that angry and lonely child of always,
that throws you the insult of that angry child of always
    and warns you:
if hypocritically you pat me on the head
I would take that opportunity to steal your wallet.

I am that child of always
before the panorama of imminent terror,
    imminent leprosy, imminent fleas,
of offenses and the imminent crime.

I am that repulsive child that improvises a bed
out of an old cardboard box and waits,
certain that you will accompany me. "

SupCom 2 is not a bad game, it's fun, I think most people who prefer FA agree with me. It did do things wrong compared to it's prequel, but that does'nt make it a waste of hard-disk space.

No. I put Supcom FA above any other game in history, that includes, chess, poker and TA.
But its definitely an unwanted child that continues to amaze those who are willing to spend some time with it.

The two biggest problems with Supcom 2 for me where, in order of importance.

The Tech Tree being the third resource but separate from the game, that you interacted with by bringing up and odd little screen and hoping you were choosing the correct upgrade of several possible, and trying to remind yourself to check it again..and again...and again...

The the game lobby and finding a game to play online was horrid.

I object, strongly. The ones playing supreme commander 2 were those unfettered by preconceptions of how the game should play. They welcomed the quirky unit names and cyborg T. Rexes into their homes. They did not cling to stream based economies and tier systems like life rafts, using them as excuses to stop the march of progress. They adapted, they learned to like the new setup, and they were too busy having fun to care that the game they were having fun in wasn't a "proper sequel".

They had the audacity to see the vision created by supreme commander 2, and embrace it. Not cower from change like it was a predator on the hunt to kill them.

tl;dr that part of your post is a joke

Supcom 2 had nothing to do with 'the march of progress', it was a regression, a retreat. It pulled back from the new frontiers the earlier games explored towards to take refuge in the 'safe' gameplay of more primitive RTSes.

    Oh, and:
3, the maps were too small, and the whole HUGE WORLDS TO EXPLORE AND CONQUER concept had been removed from the board.

Take all the games from TotalA to SC2, scratch off the title name, and have a random selection of people play them. Then ask them which games are related. How many times will SC2 be all out on its own?

    There's your answer.

to be honest i feel bad about the nerd rage i expressed over supcom 2 back in the day. gpg gave me my fave game of all time, and i shouldn't have been a right cvnt about the sequel.

that said, (other than the loss of the flow eco) my biggest criticism was that horrible auto-reset on the camera if you zoomed out far enough. i played supcom/fa at a ~45 degree angle because it made a HUGE difference to the amount of viewable terrain when zoomed in. could never get past that to enjoy the title on any level.

oh yeah, plus it was ugly as sin.

SupCom 2 had great Ideas but failed to deliver on any and ruined it with some stupid "casual" flavor.

Listing Shortcuts as a bad thing is dumb on so many levels.
A Techtree isnt "freeway lined with barbwire" and your endless jungle of SupCom Tier system stops at T4 > T3 in any big map scenario.

Stop glorifying a flawed Game like SupCom. It is great for what its, but it is in no way some sort of RTS Jesus.

Re: For Supcom 2 (a reply to all the SC2 fans on these forum

Its the other way around, Supcom went the unfettered route being quite unlike every other RTS on the market.

Supcom 2 did what every other game does today, it went for the mainstream approach. I do however not consider it a bad game, while it does go mainstream way more then supcom, it does so much less then many other games and is still quite enjoyable.

Its not a RTS Jesus, but its a very unique good rts game, theres not many titles that can claim that seeing as most titles goes towards the more mainstream approach.

One of the reason that PA got the funding it did was that its going once again for the "spiritual successor of TA" and not for the much more common "We want to make money so we go with the flow". (They will of course still adapt the game to be more accesible and successful, but hopefully not gimp it completely because of it, like many games today).

I agree fully. Im tired of hearing how Supcom 2 was inferior. NO ****, it had 1/5 of the budget. And they made the best of it. GPG survived and had more money and got to experiment with more ideas! I am thankful for the use of that talent.

Supcom 1: 10 mil dollar game
Supcom 2: 2 mil dollar game
why the hell did you expect a 10 million dollar sequel when it obviously wasnt as successful at that price?

It doesn't take ten million dollars to realise that "Wedoboth" or "Bodaboom" is a stupid name.

And it doesn't take a superhuman effort to get over a few names and like the game anyway.
I'm saying that I didn't assume and demand a flow economy or tiers or any of whatever some people thought would be in a sequel. And moreover, I didn't throw a fit when they weren't there. I rolled with the punches and looked for the good in it. Sadly, all the FA fans did their utmost to crash supcom 2 (thanks guys!!) or I bet I'd still be playing it to this day.

(wasn't referring to you necessarily, more people like BulletMagnet, PKC, zordon, and jurgen)
