for games where the "who" doesn't matter as long as the relative strength is a match, this will probably the best choice.

On the other hand, in a setting with a fixed group of players (e.g. lan) a nice handicap system might be an interesting feature. In those cases mixing up teams in more or less even strengths might or might not work. It would be nice if adding some handicap to the game setup would be possible.
I wouldn't change unit costs or strength as invisible measures, instead I would use more the above mentioned go style, as in giving the weaker player a few moves ahead e.g. in form of buildings built or a second starting position (something an enemy can see and judge in strength).
The difficulty would be to define what the extra stone equivalent would be and to decide how different two players would be in number of "stones".

If you're playing on LAN, you'll generally know prior who is good and who is green.

When I play FA at my church's LANs, I'm always standing alone and everyone bands together against me (which is hilarious, because I can play mind games without having to defend team mates).

A handicapping feature would make things interesting, but it's not really necessary in that situation.

My biggest worry is the replay / eSport system.

If you have to control different planet and zoom out or zoom in at different scale watching an 1v1 match can become difficult.

I hope you find a good solution for it

Play HoN instead? I hear the matchmaking is quite good there.

It has to do with the team game bit; there's no consistency in the matchmaking. As in, if you're getting matched at your true skill level, youll win about half of your games, but 80+% of them will be stomps.

And I have dota 2; if I wanna play something unfriendly to anyone who isn't a hardcore player, I'll do that =p

@topic: There's another worry. I want consistent matching as much or more than anything else.

Oh god don't start, there was like a 50-page anti-air discussion when this forum started, i'm just gonna let the dev's solve that problem

Do you have a summery of why that escalated?

Because generally people weren't a fan of how air worked in supcom, as in it could too easily lead to enough bombers = insta-win, and air fights always ends up in ASF spam x1000, everyone had opinions on how to fix all the problems and all of them were valid so everyone argued because this is the internet. So we just have to sit on our hands and see how the devs go about it

Well thank you for persuading me not to add my own opinion.

Not that I don't agree with the whole SC Air = win thing.

Well summed up. Everyone admitted to there being a problem, but couldn't agree on the severity or cause of that problem, or the means to curtail it. There was about 50 pages of posts on this. It was quite a good argument.

I agree that no resolution will occur until we get something to experiment with.

My biggest worry is playing a really complicated RTS on a 3D sphere, its gonna be tough lol. Especially if the planet is really small. I guess the bigger the planet the less weird it will be.

In a way i wish i was just getting a new TA in 2D. I really hope you can flatten the map out and play like a normal RTS.

My biggest worry is when I destroy the final planet of my opponent only to find out that I have destroyed the planet I am currently living on thus ending my life.

My largest concern is that the game may end up being over-optimised for competitive on-line multi-player, at the expense of the other game modes. As it has been pointed out in multiple threads, the vast and silent majority of players simply wish to fire up the game, load up a skirmish map, and have a nice fun game against one or more AIs.

Obviously, competitive multiplay should be one of the core features of the game, and there should be a lot of entertainment to it. I simply hope it isn't favoured to the point of neglecting other aspects of the game.
